another personatus caught...

****UPDATE****So the little masked angelfish arrived in Japan today...the guys that got it---Blue Harbour Aquarium Factory in Osaka. Koji Wada spent the day calling prospective customers trying to sell it for about $10,850.... That means that Rufus sold it to him for around $5000... Dang thats cheap!!! I could have had a 1" masked angel for $5000!!!!!!! Aghghghghghghg..... next time.

5K for that fish is fair compae to 6.5 for adult female.

It just goes to show its all about who you know, and what risk are you willing to take. It basically comes down to "does the collector--who is not an experienced hobbyist in rearing Juv. Genicanthus--want to risk the fish dying on him before he can ship it out to gain extra $?" in this case the $5000 was enough and he let it go as fast as Fish and Wildlife could clear his export. Smart because rearing a 1" genicanthus is like any other 1"fish...super fragile and major upkeep. A 6-7" fish can go for 2 weeks without needing to be fed, but the juv. needs to be fed several times a day because of its high metabolism.

Well, yes and no. Keep in mind, a 6-7" fish is much more difficult to decompress from such depths, whereas a 1" fish is much easier (still not a walk in the park, but better). As a result, the 1" fish should fare much better from the initial collection. Also, I would expect this fish to feed much more quickly than the large fish (which you're right it needs to as it can't sustain itself for several weeks without food).

If anything, I think it's more risky to hold the large fish than the small fish. Much greater risk of infection and decompression issues on the larger.

Every time that I log on to these threads I'm amazed at how many people are so quick to spout off on things they know so little about. It's as if every rumor in the aquarium trade instantly becomes fact as soon as someone posts it online. Both the depth and location for the collection as well as the price for the fish are incorrect. All three will continue to remain a secret for obvious reasons as we already have enough undertrained and unprepared people out there trying to make a quick buck. The only correct item is that it was sold to koji at blue harbor. It was shipped out after two days not because of any inability to care for the fish but because koji is headed to macna today and wanted to see the fish arrive in japan before he left. As far as I know, this is the first juvenile specimen to be avaliable in the aquarium trade. Hopefully, we will be able to follow up this awesome find with a bunch of peppermint angels before the year is done.

hehehehehehehehehehe....ok Rufus. Goodluck with Chip and the peppermints. BTW, thats the same spot Mike had his incident when he was out catching them, but we BOTH got a boatman so its less likely to happen to you--or me for that matter ;)

so they are really going for peppermint..!!!...i was kidding when i said somebody should go...:lol2::thumbsup:

Rufus was planning to go a few months ago but I don't know why the delay--- maybe busy or something, but I hope the guys at kaiohi make out and score some cool fishes. Just remember that place is not the US.... Logistics, legalities, and safety are all major factors.

Considering this picture was taken today, I'd say the 1.5" bandit looks pretty alive. But that's just my opinion.

Hahaha...That photo is stunning. just stunning. beautiful. I have no idea why some Japanese dude in Japan told me otherwise...maybe he was confused. In any case congrats on the the find, seriously, thats what this job is all about--having fun and seeing things that nobody else may see in a lifetime =)
