Another tank crash thread

Just writing to vent mostly...

Went away for a couple days due to a family emergency only to come home to seeing my entire 90 g mixed reef almost decimated. Seeing all of my fish dead was very hard to see. Only one clown fish survived and hope he makes it. Did a quick water change but in The last couple days I've seen most of my large SPS colonies bleach. I have a nice big collection of bleached colonies sitting on top of my tank now. The amount of time, effort, money lost makes me not want to continue. I don't know where to begin. I have some LPS, zoos that survived. I think I had a power failure for a couple mins and the pumps never restarted or something tripped the electricity...??

Sorry to hear that, was it in Chicago city? I had a gfic outlet act funny on me sometime and i swapped it out twice in the last few years just in case it happened when i wasnt home. those outlets dont last too long.

Sorry to hear about your tank crash. Would recommend doing a couple water changes to keep what you have left going.

Yikes! The same thing happened to me a year ago when i was out of town. Do a big water change and bring things back. IMO if you have big colonies dont frag them. I had about 50 colonies that partially died off and 99% of them all came back. Regardless if it was just a few polyps or so. I know how you feel. Its so hard to deal with.

If you have sand i would suggest vacuuming that out when you do the change, if your fish died you will have alot of rot in the tank. Do what you can and stand back for a little bit

When you get things back shoot me a PM and ill get you replacement frags. Im more then willing to get you a bunch cheap / free yo get you back where you were when things were good.. ive been through it, you will get over the horrible hump.

Wow, thanks guys

Really appreciate that lolgranny! I'm just gonna wait like you said. Current family issues, financial constraints are not going to allow me to get back. I really appreciate your offer.

How do I prevent something like this? If electricity tripped is there any way of knowing when you are away? Should I invest in battery pumps? Why do things happen only when you are away?

I am not sure who you have for electricity, but ComEd does offer an app for smart phones. It has a feature that allows you to see power outages on a map as well as your billing information. I don't remember off the top of my head if you get alerts or text messages if power is out in your area.....but I think that you are notified one way or another.
