another thread about controllers

Sean, glad you got something that works, regardless of the brand. It is better to have a controller, than to go without one.

Andy, it does not have to be an origional to be better. :)

Sean, reef keeper lite or elite. Accept no substitutes.

hahaha  :hammer: :lolspin:

Sean,

If you want a good controller and are on a budget, pick up a used AC Jr w/serial port. It will give you everything you needs plus the ability to connect it online.

I have owned all of them, ACIII, Apex lite, AC Jr, and RKL. Speaking from experience here not bias. Sorry to hear you got the RKL  j/k enjoy what ever it is.

I was able to pick up the RKL last night and from watching the old owner walk me thru the programming with me I can see why people perfer the neptune system interface. That being said, I think the RKL does have a place as a introductory controller for first timers due to the cost and expandability. The other threads I have read and what I seem to be gathering here point to customer service and software delays as the largest complaint for DA. I am a patient man so I think I will be fine with these things and believe that this will be a fun new side of the hobby for me! I am most excited about the development of the salinity monitoring function of controllers, which I think is huge! I know that DA is having problems with this and was wondering if NEPTUNE is working on this technology as well? Is the problem just that they probes don't last long?

Nice, man! Glad you're looking forward to it. I highly recommend programming it with myReef, but I can no longer recommend keeping it connected to the software... I've run into ground loop issues causing my pH to read at 2.1... ha!

I was under the impression Neptune is working on a salinity module if they don't already have one, but quite frankly the probes are finicky no matter where they're from. It was the same way when I had my Aquatronica. It seems to be the nature of the beast more than a manufacturer thing. IME, anyway.

Thanks mixer-I actually found a AC Jr. for the same price used as the RKL I got but it got nabbed before I could call it and I got the SL1 so they basically had the same functionality I was looking for. Seeing that AC Jr. is what started this thread.

Brandon, I know you have a lot of experience with the DA stuff, I will be sure to chat you up on this at the next meeting I see you at! And scuba stuff too!.....Brandon....Sean's personal Wiki! haha

Neptune has a salinity monitor as well, but they are not that easy to deal with. They have to be calibrated a lot. In therory they are nice, but in reality they can be a PITA. They are really accurate and they can be to accurate. For just monitoring your salinity they are ok, but I would not have them control anything, JMO.

Haha! Sounds great, Sean. You can hit Rick up on SCUBA stuff, too. But trust me... you'll never get him anywhere near a quarry! He's way too much of a pansie for anything less than 80 degree water apparently. :D :p

HAHAHAHA, I am tropical.... Put one of your fish or corals in that "quarry" and see how they like it. I see you guys in those diving pictures. It looks like you are diving in alaska :hmm4:

 Its not bad at all in the summer.

Now May... May is a different story. :D 67 on the surface means low 40s on the bottom... that's too cold for me, even with a 5mm wetsuit on! :) Maybe if I had a dry suit...
