Another West L.A. Fishstore!

I know people have alluded to this relatively new store Reefhotspot in West L.A., but here is a thread devoted to it. For all the West L.A. reefers, this store is gonna be awesome. I posted about a month back Medusa, and although they have a very nice setup, their prices are pretty darn high. Reefhotspot is located at 2037 Pontius Ave. 90025. You should all check it out. It has a warehouse feel which is nice b/c they have so much room to work with. It has so much potential and I'm excited! Anyone that's been there, let me know what you think of the store. Thanks.

After visiting Reef Hot Spot I typed up this short review in the one of the other West LA threads...

"I visited both today for the first time. I definitely recommend Reef Hot Spot. The owner was very nice and accomodating as I took my time browsing their live stock. The store's only been up and running for a couple of months and open to walk in for a couple of weeks, but their pricing and selection is pretty impressive so far ($30 for Med Croceas, $40 for larger for example). He says he plans on concentrating on SPS as they are his personal favorite. I picked up a couple of nice rics and a favia.

Medusa was ok. As others have stated, prices are pretty high ($20 for percula & common firefish). Their round coral display tank is nice with some very nice teardrop baby maximas, but other than that nothing special.

I will definitely continue to visit Reef Hot Spot whenever I'm on the westside."

Reef Hot Spot is awesome. The owner (Max) is quite knowledgable and friendly, and he takes great care of the fish and corals. All of my purchases have done well.

Check it out!

I went by Medusa the other day and noticed they have set up a jellyfish tank! It's pretty cool to check out.

Geez I gotta hit these places up... Anyone drop by Santa Monica Aquarium that just opened this week at SaMo and Federal?

Yeah, they've been open for a while now. They're still in the works of getting everything up, but what they have up right now is still pretty cool.

One of my pet peeves is when a store carries a fish that is known to not survive in captivity. Like a spotted filefish. Yeah, it will live for a while if you don't mind it eating your sps. So, there was one at the hot spot and I gave the guy crap about it. It wasn't the owner, (he may know better) but the guy was kind of defensive about it. Ya know, someone will buy it. And, lots of people buy stuff that will die in their tanks. Hmmmm, not great answers. I'm just saying that they might need a little education regarding husbandry, etc.

When you import your own fish, sometimes you get stuff you did not order....Max pointed that fish out to me, and a few others that he didnt ask for, while we were talking about his buisness. The place has alot of potential, and the filtration system is very well thought out....designed for easy expansion. That palce could handle 10x the current bio load. He guarantees his fish for 2 weeks, and when I called looking for a mystery wrass, he had one for me the next day.
Corals were OK, but I think his system needs time to mature.

Hey does anyone know if Medusa set up an Elos tank or any Elos equipment? I'm headin into town and wanted to see some of their other equipment.

Thanks!

Yeah I saw that aquarium last time I was back there a couple months ago. Its really cool. I love the circular tank with the Sfiligoi light, I took home a few corals.

Hopefully they'll get some Elos stuff up soon. I'd like to see the ca rx before I make a decision.

Sorry, changed that. :) If it helps my rep, I've probably been to over 100 Clipper games, at the Sports Arena alone and TONS of Laker games! Manning & Brown followed me to LA fifteen years ago. ;-)

My wife & my first date was a Laker game.

Since you suffered through the Sports Dungeon... I mean... Arena, all is forgiven. It was a heck of a series and Phoenix deserved to advance.

Any other suggestions for LFS in the westside with decent dry goods selection? Gonna to to reefhotspot for some peppermint shrimp, but talked to them and they're low on the dry goods.

Thanks,
Tony
