Anthias crash

our anthias swam up and hit the light tonight and then was stuck on the glass brace for about 5 minutes we heard him hit then we finally got him back in the tank and hes hiding,when i moved the rock he was under hes swam away real slow and hid under another rock,sound like hes going to croak or is he just stressed? im worried he got cooked being under the lights

if he's not dead yet, sounds like he might recover!
not much you can do i suppose though.

Did he make it? I had one on the basement floor that I rescued. I really thought he was fish jerky, but when I went to pick him up, he twitched, so I put him back in the tank & he made a full recovery.

I think he told his buddies b/c no one has jumped since then. :lol:

I bet his tail dried out and it became necrotic. It'll grow back if he get healthy enough

What kind of Anthias was it? We are looking at adding some Anthias to our tank. I've read some are more apt to jumping that others.

For you guys with Anthias, any thoughts on the Despair or Sunburst?

you have to feed them alot to keep them alive,which fouls your water,just a heads up

That's part of the concern if we were to add them. We run a MyReef MRC-3 with a single beckett on a PCX55-HP currently. Water quality today is outstanding with a single feeding of mixed Mysis and Brine (1-cube each). We also alternate with Brine Shrimp direct flake and cyclo.

If you must have an anthias, I recommend the lyrtails. I feed mine a lot of mysis or brine once a day. They are better at storing the fat for future use than most of the others. But they can also be bullys (mine are tough on new fish and have even killed one) to new tank mates especially those that are also living in the water column and who compete for meaty food.

The other anthias options have very high metabolism with very little ability to store fat. So they have to eat a lot often or they will wither away over time. One of the last couple of issues of Coral magazine had a detailed article on anthias. If you want to get some, it's a good read.

I guess I've had them for a year and a half. One of them was the jumper who survived. I don't feed everyday, but I have 300gal w/ lots of LR & a light bio-load. I think they're good as far as anthias go. I haven't had any aggression issues, they seem hardy, they eat well, and I don't need to feed them excessively.

Your LFS can order them for you.

Pretty fish Becky. Do they eat flakes or other foods besides frozen meat? My female lyrtail will eat flakes but the male won't.
