Anthias help needed

Hello all,

ok so I started with 5 Bartlet anthias, and now I have only 2 .... reason for death was jumping out of the tank and me finding them dry one by one [3 jumped in one week !!!] now I have the sides of the tank covered,

but there are 2 larger bartlets in there still.

I want more movements and colors, soo want to add about 10-11 more anthias in the tank. [200 G]

can anyone advice me on how to go about this ? get 11 bartlet small ? can i mix lyretail anthias with them ?

any advice is appreciated.

nice what kind ?

they are beautiful, yet tricky fish to keep in large schools for me, the Bartlett's all turn male and start killing one another. I suspect the reason I lost 3 of mine was the same. if you dont have any in the tank right now, get lyretail IMHO. they seem to get along with each other better. I also had 3 lyretail anthias in this tank that didnt last ... the bartlets were assulting them all the time tilll one day I found them against my MP60 :(

but the purple and yellow on bartlets are just priceless :D lol

hopefully some one with more anthias experience will help us both find the most "stable" school of anthias. [of course given they are all well fed.] one specie ? mix ? or ... lol

I have bartlett's in mine as well. I think I went from 10 to 7, 2 from jumping, 1 from shipping.

I ordered 1 male with my first order, who was much bigger than the rest. I have 4 of them that are almost full grown size, and 3 that are much smaller.

Just recently I had another full grown bartlett compete and turn into a male, but it appears that it's the sub male and I'm getting a super male (the original male). I love them and they are great fish. I would just add more bartletts if you like them.

They do get along with lyretails IME as well.

I've had 3 lyretail anthias at once. It may be that the jumping comes from the competitiveness within the school life of these fish and the constant fighting for hierarchy. Check out the article below. Very informative. I would have had some anthias jump to their death while trying to escape a combative fish jockeying for position within the school (if 3 can be considered a school), but, I have a full hood over my tank (QT). I have watched many-a-nights as one of my females that was turning male harassed and chased the other female in the tank. I've heard her bump her head many times on the top of the tank trying to jump away from her pursuer. I added a full male thinking he would dominate, but she went after him mercilessly as well. The aggressive female (turning male) passed away, and my full male and full female pair couldn’t be happier. No aggression. Just love…

Anyway: Check out this link. Maybe it'll help.

Best of luck!!!

im set on lyretail for some reason,i dont have any anthias right now but i have learned that most people buy them in quanities.thats to bad u lost ur anthias, never good when we loose animals.bartlets are pretty fish for sure!
good luck to you with your new anthias.pics are a must!!!

so why would one need to get 1 male and the rest female if they seem to turn male more often than not.say get all females and 1 or 2 might/will turn male.them all being together from the getgo you would think they would get along just fine"you would think'...lol.

allmost: your getting 10 or 11 do you know how many males/femals you are goin to purchase?

I was hoping someone with first hand experience could chime in.

I appreciate the replies, but I am not interested in what others guess ! unless the guess is coming form someone with a huge of school of anthias for many years.

I have covered the top.

question is, the good old anthias question, what species mix do you keep ? how many ? how long ? I want ppl who can keep school of over 10 anthias for long term, meaning over a couple of years.

thanks;

Again,

I've kept bartlett's with lyretails and ignitus with 0 problems.

All of these fish eat/ate anything I throw in the tank. I feed roughly everyday but don't stress about missing a day.

The only thing that has any problem with my male bartlett is my male lineatus wrasse. Nothing major.

I had purple queens in my tank as well, with the rest of them. I won't do that again unless an auto feeder of some sort was implemented or training them to eat prepared foods a little better.

I think you'll be fine mixing lyretails with bartletts. I did it without issues. However, I had plenty of issues with bartletts in general. They all tend to turn male, and don't particularly like each other at that point. Plus, with no female bartletts to occupy their time, they tended to harass any female anthias. The ended up killing more peaceful species like ignitus and carberryi. I'll personally never own bartletts again.
