Anthias!

I emerged from the basement last night and actually visited a LFS. They had the most beautiful anthias. I wonder how hard it is to get them to spawn and to raise the babies? Wouldn't that be amazing, to have a tank with hundreds of them?

Kathy, from everything I've read and my experiences in the LFS business, I'd say they're probably pretty tough to breed, mostly for the same reasons mandarins are, i.e. their tough to keep alive.

If I had more tanks, the one I want to try is that "Pygmy Geometric Hawkfish" which lies somewhere between an Anthias and a Hawkfish, only gets to be like 1-2" in length, and otherwise seems pretty peaceful and easier to keep, not to mention they're still retailing between $50-$100 per fish at 1" in size.

whats a LFS

I have seen reports of them spawning in old german tanks back in the 80s they kept them in harems and some will spawn, the larvae have to be hard to raise, it would be nice to have tr eating dry foods. It should look spectacular.

I think they are very similar to gramma sp. in the social structure and beleive they will require live foods to get them going.
