anthias can live singly. I know a few people who have either a pair or just one in similar sized tanks

They can?
I always thought they had to be with more than one or two.

In a 55gallon? Get a lyretail or a dispar. Also check out flame anthais, they're all pretty hardy and like to eat most everything. You actually might be able to keep a few in there if you have enough room for them to swim... mine like to swim in between my rocks all day.

no anthias ARENT hardy. If you get them healthy you are doing good. they seem quite predisposed to popeye, and worms. You shoudl worm them when you get them for sure, and QT them to get them eating well. I've had a few just never eat and die. this isnt uncommon, but out of the 8 of my origional hutchiis, and the 7 of my origional flames i have 5 hutchiis, and 6 flames..

often many species of anthias are better kept singly in smaller tanks as there is no aggression, you need about 2ft squared of tank surface for one of the smaller anthias species. The biggest issue I have had with anthias is internal parasites after that they are hardy when acclimated and given peaceful surroundings, strong water flow(induces feeding) and high water quality., I hve a female bimac in a 60 cube always out and a great eater of frozen foods.
I also have 8 lyretails on their own in a 110 gallon tank as an experiment I bought all females and within 2 months the dominant female has almost fully change into a male. they are very aggressive fish but the aggression is shared around the 7 subordinates and females so no one fish is getting picked on constantly as the would in pairs or trios. i cant really see much of a hierachy other than the male being horrid to all.

so you can have the singly, as pars or as a group. but if you pack them in you will have to consider tha they need regular feeding that will cause pollution issues.
