i have a 200 g mainly sps reeftank. Before using.a circulation pump in sump i had a lot of detritus there. Also i get impression that after the pump starts and detritus go main display tank sps polips increase extension.
Please share your experience and knowledge. Thanks :)

I recently did the same in my sump but I only turn the pump on every few days for a hr or so. I do notice when the detritus is stirred up and pumped into the DT my sps goes crazy so it is definitely beneficial

is it really An Advantage running a circulation pump in the sump ?

thanks:thumbsup:

i use sump (macro/refugium compartment) as a place for detritus to settle. at nights i will sometimes stir the bottom to feed the SPS..

SunnyX was the first person that told me to do it (not his own idea), according to him it helps to keep detritus from accumulation in the bottom of your sump and improves skimmer performance.

Before I would consider adding a circulation pump to the sump, I would first consider what I'm trying to accomplish, and how the sump could be designed better or utilized. Detritus is always going to accumulate in a sump, and I've always manually siphoned it out when I'm doing a water change, however, if you're getting an inordinate amount of buildup I would probably think about manual filtration first (i.e. adding an additional filter sock, or running one if you're not); if you see stagnate water on the surface in the sump I would look at the depth of water in the sump in relation to the exit of the skimmer, or carbon/GFO reactor. In my sumps I have the exit down spout on the skimmer maybe a 1/2" below the waters surface......I also return the water from the carbon reactor, not directly down into the sump, but I put a 90 degree connector so the return agitates the waters surface. You can also create flow in a sump by way of baffles, or return pump flow. I would do any one of these things before I put another pump in the sump.

Hope this helps.

Good luck.

I use filter sock so detritus gets trapped there. I am going to run a PH though in the sump to help stirr up ALK when it's dosed. It will be timedvia the apex. a few mins prior to dosing and maybe 5 mins after dosing

its all advantages .
more circulation therefore better gas exchange.
as others mentioned, food stays suspended more and corals and skimmer can remove it better.

no detritus built up to rise po4.

I'm a firm believer with faster flow throughout the system period. The only thing I don't do in my sump is NOT light it up, it's cryptic and full of sponges.

you will need a pump in sump as well as in return section for it to work. or just use a filter sock. I keep an mj1200 running 24x7 at the bottom of my overflow box. I find the overflow box is where heavier detritus accumulates, and is the main source of nitrates. ever since I added the pump, my overflow box is always 100% clean.
