Any Chronic carbon users out there?

Has anyone posted this stuff on the chem. forum and asked Randy what he thinks about it or has he even heard about it?

OK guys, here's the skinny

You don't want a 220 lb drum. There are special charges for the drum itself and the shipping is higher. You are better off with 4 55 pound bags which are $105 INCLUDING shipping each.

It is Bituminous Coal with a high hardness rating of 92. This means that if you want to run it in a canister filter, you can without producing fines (dust).

They've acid washed and water washed it so there will be a low ash content which is a good thing. (You still want to rinse it again).

The model number to order is COLGL60 and you can pay by credit card if you want. You need to specify a mesh size. I would recommend 12 X 40 over 20 x 50 but that's just my preference. Here's a chart so you can decide for yourself.

The Iodine number is 900. I prefer 700 or below but see my "Cost Considerations comment at the end".

The Molasses number ranges from 150 to 180. I prefer 400 or above. Again, see "Cost Considerations".

I also confirmed that the Coconut Carbon and the Coal and Water/Acid Washed Carbon was not a mixture. They just carry both products in those mesh sizes. (The reason I cared is look how bad the Coralife Blend did in this test).

COST CONSIDERATIONS

This GAC is not optimized for a reef tank. The Iodine number is not ideal and the Molasses number is not ideal. We don't know the Methyl Blue #, we don't know the TSA.

With that said, that's one heck of a price. Even though it isn't as efficient, you have so much of it for your money, you can afford to "waste it" by changing it much more often and you are still in good shape moneywise in my opinion.

Is it really worth spending the time changing out the carbon even more rather than paying a bit more and getting something that is more ideal...I'd be interested in something better.
