any good LFS around stonybrook university?

I will be there tomorrow for about 4 hours, just wondering if there is anything nice on the way back or around.

Just mapquested around some of romain's list of LFS and these two stores came within 20 minutes of Stony Brook university campus. Country Critters and Aqua Hut. Anybody recommend these two? or not worth the trip?

Aqua hut is my favorite place, but sometimes the'yre out of fish. CC is nice, but VERY pricey. Still worth looking around at each if you're in the area.

Where are you driving from? That will give us an idea of what is on the way. Pets Warehouse is south shore, Copiague, and Suffolk Fish and Reef is right off the LIE in Ronkonkoma. Otherwise AquaHut is the closest (I'm at the university too).

I was at Aqua Hut on Thurs, due to the storm they don't know if they were to receive corals and fish today, sat or have to wait till next thurs.

Aquahut, Suffolk Fish and Reef, and Country Critters are probably the closest. Aquahut has great prices on equipment, but I am not impressed with their livestock. Based on 5 or 6 visits over the last three months, I have regularly seen dead fish in their tanks, and their corals never look terribly healthy (sloughing tissue off, etc.). Suffolk Fish and Reef is certainly more expensive, and their livestock quality is variable. I have been in there when everything looks fantastic, and I have been in there when their fish have been having problems and significant algae outbreaks in the coral tanks. Country Critters has a great selection, but they are the most expensive of the three stores listed here. From a conscientious perspective, they do keep some fairly large livestock in very small tanks. I suppose they expect to sell some of these critters fairly quickly, but I think that probably isn't realistic given the animals involved.

Ooops - I forgot one. Magic Isle Aquarium in Centereach has healthy fish and inverts, somewhat reasonable prices, but limited selection.

With Aqua Hut you need to be there waiting for the cherry pieces of coral. That is usually Wed night, thursday you've got a good chance, Friday is slim pickens

I was only able to visit Aqua Hut...and I wasn't too impressed. Maybe I visisted at a bad day. Most of the shipments floating in the tanks were dead, and the corals tank looked dead and dismal.
