Any idea what happened?

I asked in the fish forum and got no replies and I need a fast reply. I didn't notice until someone today said, "where is the copperband butterfly?" I looked around and noticed he wasn't there either, I didn't notice all day that he wasn't swimming around. I bought the fish from the retail store in Rhinelander and he was a new shipped fish, they only had him for 1 day and he wasn't eating at the store. I brought him home and he cleared the aiptasia in 1 to 2 weeks and then picked on the rock all the time. I had him for 1 month or so. I cannot find him, I even looked in the overflow boxes with a mirror to try to find him, but I didn't find anything.

I checked the ammonia and the water came to 4.0. I am using the saltwater master test kit (liquid drops) that I bought 1 year ago when I set up my first tank. The tank is a 125 gallon with 40 gallon sump with some chaeto, activated carbon, rocks, and a phosban reactor. I am getting water made up now for a water change, and also already changed the carbon and phosban.

Those test kits I now know aren't the greatest either and they are a year old. I am going to order some salifert soon for ammonia I think. If the ammonia really was 4.0, the fish would most likely not even be swimming around, correct? They are out swimming, eating, and not appearing to be gasping for air.

The copperband is not found anywhere in the tank or floor, maybe he died off since he didn't eat (he didn't look like he obtained a depressed belly, but CBBs are real thin anyway). Maybe he didn't make it and the snails ate him? Would ceriths/turbos eat fish like that? I only have about 4 nessarius when I transfered tanks.

I know they are hard to keep, but it's like he is gone and no where to find him. I know someone local that lost his 4" powder blue tang that way. He couldn't find him anywhere in the tank, just disappeaered. Maybe the snails ate it and also the CBB?

T5nitro,

We’re sorry to hear about your Copperband Butterfly. With your ammonia readings being so high it does sound like your fish perished and decomposed in your tank. In all probability the “clean up crew” did just as it is intended.

While you are sorting out your water parameters (new test kit and water change) please feel free to call with any questions and we will be happy to assist you.
