any ideas for pumping salt mix up to second floor from basement

Dieseldaisy - i use a Shurflo RV demand pump to get the saltwater upstairs - it is $99 at northerntool. it is has a pressure shutoff, meaning if you have a valve at the tank to add saltwater, when you open it the pump will turn on, and when you close it the pump will turn off. It cannot be used for mixing the saltwater/etc - delivery only - also after about 1 hour of use, it will auto shutoff for the motor to cool down, however it takes only a 3-4 minutes to pump 10 gallons up 20 feet for my system.

Late to the party on this thread but I do exactly this with an Iwaki MD-70. When I was re-doing my kitchen I put a 1" PVC line from the basement all the way up to under my sink on the 2nd floor, along with some thermostat wire. The MD-70 is in the basement with the water change resevior. I use the thermostat wire with a switch under the sink to operate a relay which turns the pump on/off, that way I can be upstairs with it and turn it off. I have a quick connect fitting that I run to a garden hose from the kitchen to the tank in the living room, about 30 feet.

Even with the pretty big Iwaki I only get about 50-60gph out of it going that crazy distance and height. But with 45 gallon water changes, I get it done in the same number of minutes and my back really appreciates it :). So yes, do-able, but with a REALLY BIG pump.

Others' ideas of using a peristaltic or diaphragm (or even gear pump if noise isn't much of an issue) would work as well, but you'd need to transfer first to a resevior next to the tank and then use the mag drive for the last step. It's a little less automated and a prolonged experience, but much cheaper than a mammoth centrifugal

just food for thought

just food for thought

So about 2 months ago my parents went very green environmentally that is they started a green house in their sun room they use r/o water which is setup in the basement which i plumbed into a 50 gallon drum with a float valve to turn off the r/o when it fills or gets to low. After this I went to quite a few places to figure out the issue of pumping water about 15 feet upward and then about 100 feet across their whole house from basement to the 1st floor which i then plumbed to a quick release in the sunroom. I went to two stores to look into this issue one thing you can look into trying to find is a pool pump I know I will probably get knocked for this because your using saltwater but these pumps are fantastic. I am trying to find out the model today for you and I will check what I did on mine at my house which I have a similar setup here for my 120G which i auto top off every day as well as do water changes constantly but pool pumps which i've found on craigslist for not a lot also I know G at ABC has some pretty strong pumps right now for sale to not sure for how much but they are used anyways i'll take some pics and find out model names and numbers for you but in my system i have 3 maxi jets circulating the salt water in my drum and as far as I am concerned its really not that elaborate i think i put the whole thing together for around $280/300 thats with the pump and hosing i used.

Good point on the pool pump. I used the MD-70 cause it had a bad bearing and was free if I was willing to replace it ;). Which I did, and couldn't be happier. It probably wouldn't last runing full-time with the cheapo bearing I put in it, but I could care less, it just has to do minor intermittent work.
