any ideas for pumping salt mix up to second floor from basement

yes I was assuming that I need 100 foot of hose. I might only need 60 or 70 but your right just try it and see if it works. if it don't work it don't work then I will have to see my other options

Here is a better idea any place near the tank you can put your ro container run ro tubing from the ro unit upstairs somehow and let the water pressure be your pump ro tube is pretty easy to hide

maybe a utility pump. You can get them in larger sizes and there a little cheaper than aquarium pumps depending on where you get them. Just make sure theres no oil in the pump. I used one in a koi pond when I was working on it...But saltwater is a little different than pond water...just a tought

30 feet of head is a lot, add a long run of a small diameter hose like a garden hose at 3/4" or so and you need a serious pump to move anything worthwhile upstairs.

The other issue is turning it on and off, harder than it seems when you are on the second floor and the pump is in the basement.

The earlier idea of running an RO/DI line up and making water upstairs is more reasonable.

I moved my 72 from upstairs to the 1st floor, water changes were a pain

This is the easiest and cheapest route. Was recently looking for a high head pump to do this but couldn't justify the huge cost for a pump, to use a couple times a month.. What I do is drag up my barrel, pump, and heater run about 40 ft of ro tubing (cheap) and drag it across the house for a couple hrs (I try to do it late the night before so its not a hassle) and when im done put it all away again or in an empty closet if you have one! As long as your water pressure is sufficient I don't see any affects with this setup and works fine for me.

yeas take the output tube from the ro and run it upstairs to a container in a closet etc and make your salt there that will cost what $6 for ro tube just an fyi that a ton of tube so the first few mins of water may not be 100% pure

I am not sure what I want to do yet. that might not be an option for me. I have a storage container in my basement that is already mixed with salt . and I don't have room to keep that where my tank is. I might just have to suck it up and carry buckets up there every week like i have been.

lets say you want to move 20 gallons in 10 minutes => 120GPH

using garden hose 3/4" 30 feet of head, 70 horizontal

an iwaki 70-RT would probably be the minimum pump at 165HPH estimating time to move 20 gallons at 7.2 minutes. [note real life varies from paper calculations]

This pump runs around $350 + S/H

I moved the 72 onto the first floor and it is connected to the shared basement sump with the 120 display - this lets me manage both displays completely from the basement.

While it was upstairs water changes were by bucket and a pain in the rear.

I'm interested in seeing your basement setup if you have any pictures. what type of pump do you need for your return pump on your display tanks?
