This came in on some live rock and has grown from a dust speck to about the size of a tennis ball... i think it looks really neat and would like to know what it is and if i can trim it and replant it like some houseplants or if trimmed peices will just die...
thanks for all the help and advise!

Try halymenia. You should get plenty of hits with the other names mentioned though, just common names, but all the same.

Yep, Halymenia.

IME it's impossible to frag or transplant, and it eventually died back in my tank. Enjoy it while it lasts!

A member from our local club has frag a ton of pieces for us. Mine is doing great in the display tank.

It grows fast and darkens to a blood red in shaded areas but seems to still grow up towards the light, it is very attractive.

I think about 10 frags were made from the main plant.

nice! the main plant ive got has rooted entitrely through the rock it hitchhiked in on.. and is now about tripple what it is in the picture.. so then the "frags" from this species dont survive well? or is there a trick to doing it?

Mine never attached. It just kind of floats around the tank and finds a new spot every week or so. My tang likes to pull it around but realizes it is too thick for him to eat it.

There are tons of little frags all over the tank that survive. I tried to superglue the main stalk to a rock but it eventually detached.
