I would say they can definitely travel in the current to other acropora but they eat the flesh of the acros, I don't believe they can consume the acroporas hard skeleton. Maybe the BB sized hole was already there and you just didn't notice before?
I see what you mean about under the coral now. Sometimes corals can leave gaps between the growth and the plug while they encrusted and they can definatly fit in tight spots.

Before my outbreak the coral had no holes and after two of them did.
