Any interest in seining at Desoto?

I have read previous posts about the fun of seining and most of the time they seem to be at ft. desoto. I think it would be fun to get a group of us together and wanted to see if anyone else would be interested? I figure maybe like Sat. morning... and let it go for as long as people wanted? So, does anyone want to meet up and have a little fun?

I have never been to Desoto but I am absolutely in. I go to honeymoon island just north west of clearwater. It is a state park and the farthest north island in the area with no major boating channels and small number of beach goers. It costs $5 but the variety is crazy because it has rock covered dunes out in the surf.

Great, we have three now and I am sure we will get another 5-10 people, which is fantastic. So others may suggest or plan, how does this Sat. at 10 am sound? That is the 26th and 10 am will allow for it to still be cool but not morning chilly. I have read several posts from a FL biology professor who seins often apparently, does anyone know who she (I think its a she) is and if so, she may be a perfect person to invite.

LoL it's ladyFSU, im sure she'd be intrested but school started so she may not be checking the forums as much. Okay, well i work from 3pm-8pm on saturday, so as long as we're done by 1:30 (latest) then I'm in. I work at bestbuy on dalemabry so it's quite a drive from ft desoto. Do you have a seining liscense? i think you might have to have one inorder to go seining, i have a fl salt/fresh water fishing liscense but id ont think thats good enough.

I am not sure about needing a seining license... I have not read or heard of that. I have read through the recreational license stuff here http://myfwc.com/marine/workgroups/Marine_Life_68B-42-new.pdf
and since whatever we decide to keep is for our tanks and not for sale, we should be okay. Under the gear and prohibited gear, seins are not mentioned in either section. I guess maybe we will hear from someone on here that knows for sure.. if not, maybe we will just use hand nets given that unless someone has a sein, that is what we will have anyway :D

Thanks for the offer. I LOVE to seine, but this weekend I think I'm going to be busy :( If someone can get close to me, they can borrow a seine net. It may be closer to you to go to Bradenton and buy one (actually, probably somewhere right there sells them). Here is the site for the guy who sells alot of seine nets. They are less than $20. http://cgi.ebay.com/4-X-6-1-4-MESH-...ryZ31708QQssPageNameZWD1VQQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem

Also, as far as a license, you only need a saltwater license to seine. Here's the link about it. http://askit.myfwc.com/cgi-bin/myfw...nBfc2VhcmNoX3RleHQ9c2VpbmU*&p_li=&p_topview=1

I wish I could go. I still might be able to but the chances are VERY slim. Please post up pics. I've never been down there and sure would like to go.

ladyFSU, we will take tons of pics and post them similar to what you did in your post. Most of the people on here have never seine including myself and I think we will really enjoy the experience. So people can schedule and plan, lets make it Sat at 10am. The Ft. Desoto park is pretty large but for those who need the meeting location, lets all meet at the tampa bay side and I will post a picture of a map in a little bit. Basically, you drive into the park and the road dead ends into a T. Turn left, past the beach parking area and the road dead ends into a loop, with parking on the sides.
For those who have not done this, anyone who joins (all are welcomed) and would like to take anything home for their Q. tank, you must have a saltwater fishing license per state rules. And no taking of Whale Sharks :-)

The address for those who mapquest directions:

3500 Pinellas Bayway S.,
Tierra Verde, FL 33715

Here is a map of the park. The blue arrow shows the road coming into the park and the RED dot shows where we can meet.

Here are directions that may work for those familier with the area:

Take Interstate 275 to south St. Petersburg and the Pinellas Bayway exit (#17). Pass through toll booth ($0.50). Continue on over two bridges and take the Tierra Verde (Hwy 679) road heading south. Continue past Tierra Verde through the next toll both ($0.35) to the "T" in the road. Go left (East) at the "T". About a mile or so, you will dead end into the circle turnaround and parking spaces.

K-Mart or Wal-Mart should have the seine nets, I think they're less than $20. Also consider one of the long handled dip nets, I've caught lots of stuff with mine. I have both here at the house, you're welcome to borrow them, I'm in St. Pete, shoot me a PM if you're interested.

Acolin, start shuffling :) ... I assume it will only be from like 10 to 12 or so... not really sure because I have never done it... We would love for you to make it.. bring the family too if you want...

Dennis,

A pool may be easier. The beach there down the road has showers though.... but a pool does sound more fun :)
I am glad to see you join us, there should be about 4 of us there as far as I know... I hope a few more show up that are too shy to post....
