I want to first be clear that I am not accusing anyone here of being the type of person this rule was created for. There are a few good reasons to require pricing on anything offered, but it's primarily in order to protect unknowing noobs that are easily taken advantage of. We can't just apply this rule to those we think might be shady, we have to apply it evenly across the board, and that's why you guys heard from me.
I'm not selling anything. If it wasn't clear, I'm giving them away for free. Just want some space back in my tank, not money.
Free is always good, but we need to see the word free, and you cant put conditions on it like
"it's not necessary, but I would accept XXXXXXX in exchange". That makes it a sale/trade and all selling/trading rules apply (IE: 50 posts/90 days, pricing, etc).
I apologize for anything that was posted. I just listed corals that I have available. He asked if people had anything. I did not realize I had to put a price on something that I was just listing as I have these available if you would like type of statement. I will not let it happen again.
Please see above, I may come off a bit short in some posts, I don't always have as much time to craft a post as I would like, and I can easily be read as making accusations. That's usually not my intent.
Any time you offer something in a post, you have to price it, or at least value it if you wish to trade, not sell. If you are offering it free, you're a good person, we could all use a little more of that attitude , but as stated above, it's got to be clear that it's free, and that there are no strings attached.
The alternative is PM. If an unscrupulous character offers something in a post, it's out there forever, and many noobs could potentially fall victim. If it's offered in a PM, only one target risks getting hit, and then that person can report the PM and post in buyer/seller feedback
Buyer/seller feedback forum, where everyone should look before dealing with people they don't know.
I offered to build someone a stand but I had no idea what size they wanted and I didn't post a price. That's ok right?
The literal letter of the rule would put that post in a commercial category. I have not seen the post, but as you describe it, it's an ad that people searching for a stand builder could potentially find as long as RC is here.
I actually assume that you're a guy like myself with a little bit more than a skillsaw and some screwdrivers. Not a "standbuilder" by any stretch of the imagination, and not seeking repeat business from your post. Chances are that you didn't post a price because all you would ask is a cold beer, a slice of pizza and a pair of hands to help hold things square as you set the screws.
I get that, but there are folks trying to make a business out of hobby related stuff like that. Some will beat some of our members for $$$ or hobby stuff, others will actually compete with the businesses that sponsor Reef Central and keep it free for you to use. We couldn't allow those posts for free, as our sponsors would get fed up, quick and stop sponsoring.
My apologies for coming off rough in my first post here. I hope I have given you some insight into why things are how they are.
