I have 3 yellow tails and just yesteday I noticed that one laid eggs on a shell. It's pretty defensive of the spot I wonder if they fry will survive?

Are you talking about the yellow tailed damsel from Florida? The young are very pretty(the nickname used to be Jewelfish) but as most "terrestrial" Florida and Caribbean Damsels, they become very terriorial and will chase all fish out of the tank. And they should be quite easy to raise. But you probably have the bright blue, yellow tailed damsels from the Pacific or Indian ocean. Damsels are basicly like clowns, easy to raise, but not worth it in the money part, but worth it in the "I did it" part. I say start some rotifers, get some brine shimp eggs, and some nanochloropsis and a few other micro algaes, and set up a tank just like a clown fry tank, and you should have baby damsels. You will have to get the shell in the fry tank the night they will hatch. I have had them lay every 2 or 3 weeks, just like clowns, so it should be easy to figure exactly when they hatch.
