Well started my weekly maintenance this weekend like I always do and started to work on my 24 gallon nano which is where I keep all my Zoo's and some misc corals. Notice all the Zoo's where closed and some of the other corals are bleach looking. Well I put my hand in the tank and to my surprise a shock. I mean an electrical shock. I immediately unpluged everything to discover my heater broke. This must have happened overnight and I'm finding dead worms on the sand bend, etc. My grounding probe some how wasn't plugged all the way. Who know s what going to survive. This after a storm which knocked out my power 4 weeks ago for 16 hours. That wasn't too pretty in 90 plus degree weather on my SPS tank. It's no wonder why I see more and more people getting out of this hobby. Just venting....

I am sure this had happened to many others as well. I had this happened to me not long ago, and had switched to Titanium heaters. No more worries about broken heaters.

I agree with the Titanium heaters but I don't think they make one small enough to fit in a 24 gallon nano cube. I could be wrong. I run them in my SPS tank with no trouble.

Try the Visitherm Stealth Heaters. I use a couple of 'em and love 'em. They are inexpensive too. I believe that they make a 50 watt, but I'm not positive.

i don't use a heater for that vary reason. the lights heat the water and at night it is cooled....mimicing the ocean in my opinion. just a thought

Exactly Ostrow! I was wondering the same thing.....

ReefWorld03- If you don't have a GFCI, you can p/u a GFCI power strip at Menard's (the hardware store). I think I got mine for approx. $25 or $30. You NEED one of these. It'll keep stray current out of your water and your house from burnin' down due to the inevitable dripping of saltwater into your power strip. I use one and it saved my butt within 6 hours of installing it. I will never go without one of these again.

I have them installed on all my tanks except the 24 gallon nano which sits next to my desk at home. I run a 75 gallon SPS tank , 55 gallon lps tank and the 24 gallon nano for zoos. I've been meaning to get one for the 24 gallon nano but with all my time being spend working on my new 210 SPS tank I just over looked it for a while. I really need to get my 210 up and running so I can shut down a few other tanks. I spend to much time weekly maintaining. Not including the expense of running multiple tanks.

Finnex makes small titanium heaters, I think you can get them at PA. I have two of their normal ones and love the remote temp control.

It's a trip when you here a gfci pop.Then you relize it just saved your life.Then you swear at yourself for doing something real stupid,like useing a glass heater.Been there done that.Glad your OK.

The Ocean cools at night???? It's far too large of body of water to cool overnight. Maybe a degree or to during seasonal changes, but not overnight. You should really have a heater on your system to maintain a constant temp, to mimic the ocean.

Trust me there was no doubt I was going to replace that heater with a titanium heater. It's one of those dumb things that you knew you where suppose to do but found yourself putting it off because other things coming up. Lucky for me nothing happened except it looks like I'm going to lose zoos and other corals which can be replaced.

i did not say that it cooled alot. a degree or two in the tank is nothing drastic. I would say that in my tank (3 x 400 watt halides and a chiller) my tank does not move but a degree or a degree in a half without a heater. a heater is not on my tank for the above mentioned reasons. only had problems with them and never without. just my opinoin...not saying it is for everyone.
