Any of you guys/gals use dursos?

Got tubes?
Hi all!

Part of my Christmas break plans for my tank include silencing and just generally overhauling my plumbing.

I was wondering if any of you guys used Durso standpipes?

The main reason I ask is because someone a while back recommended doing an external one. Pretty much, the "street ell" would connect directly to my bulkhead on the back and the rest of the standpipe would be behind my tank instead of in an overflow. :)

I can't see right off a reason for this not to work. What do you all think? Have any of you done it?

Thanks!

Brandon

I don't know what a street ell is, but I think many of us use durso's. If the back of your tank is drilled, you can do a 90 on the inside of the tank, and a tee on the outside with a cap on the upper part that has a hole in it for air, and the drain pipe hooked to the lower part of the tee. This can work just fine. The only problem is a regular durso has a safety mechanism built in depending on how high up the air hole is -- if the water level ever gets too high it will cover over the air hole which creates a full siphon and flushes the water. With the air hole on the outside of the tank, you miss that safety feature. That's okay though, just a bit of increased risk of flood if the drain should ever partially plug for some reason.

Just a suggestion but what if you put a tee inside the tank instead of the elbow. You could cap the top of tee and put in an air hole. This way if the water level rose above the tee, the siphon would start.

I am not sure that would work quite right to silence things. It would be easy to try, though. It would be cool if it worked :)

The only thing about that is that it adds so much depth to the setup that the hole for silence would stick up past the top of the tank anyway. :)
