Any suggested NanoCube 24g Upgrades?

So I am starting a "NanoReef"
Having read much of the newb info on this site, my 24 gallon tank now has 30+lbs of cured LR and 25lbs of LS sitting in saltwater. My goal would be to one day have this tank filled with a wide variety of thriving soft corals and a few small reef safe fish.

To reach this humble goal, are there any lighting/filtration upgrades I absolutly need to buy that the nano did not arrive with out of the box?

See what a nano comes with here

Thanks in advance for your suggestions!

Upgrade the return pump to a MaxiJet 1200, remove all the stuff that came in the chambers and toss it. Get some Purigen, some disposable filter floss (pillow stuffing from WalMart), a good quality heater in chamber 3, a second MJ1200 to create a closed loop or just place it in the display area for added flow.

Put the Purigen in the bottom of chamber 1 or 2, put a hand full of floss in chamber 1 just below the intake grate.

Soft corals will do fine under the stock lighting of the 24DX.

Good Luck

The basic upgrade is replacing the stock pump with a maxijet 1200, tossing all the filter media that it came with and using Purigen and Chemi-pure in the back chambers and Filter Floss in the first chamber in place of the sponge.

remember, that a lot of soft corals like low to medium flow, so if you upgrade to one or two 1200 pumps make sure you have a mechanism to spread the current and keep it random.

I have to say even with the two MJ1200's in my 24DX the flow is still a little soft for my taste. Still too many dead spots that I have to keep up with...

But your point is still valid.

I put one of those 360 degree rotating adapters at the end of one of my lock line's. Hydor Flo's. Thought it was a cheap upgrade.

How do those HydroFlo adaptors work? It says it sprays 360 so that would mean at some point it would be spraying directly up towards the surface. Wouldn't this cause the water to hit the lighting fixture?

Well, I took out the standard pump and put in a rio+ 1400, it's on a Y adapter loc line that I angled down. So theres two flow restrictions, the Y adapter and the hydor flo itself. All it does when it rotats up is create a bigger ripple on the surface. The aquapod comes with a shield over the lights so if any water did splash up it would just hit the plastic. It's no biggie honestly.

I replaced my stock pump on my 29 bio cube with the MJ1200 and placed a MJ900 in the middle rear of the display with a hydor flow and it blew all of the the sand around in the back of the tank so I took it out.

could u please take a pic of what ur talking about, u said somthing aoubt 2 pumps, i just recently added purigen and chemipure and the filterfloss and i havent heard anything aoubt a y set up or 2 pumps in a nano.

THe loc line Y adapters come standard on the new aquapods, I couldn't find a picture...edit found one! But the ones I've seen had about 3-4" extensions. I can see how the hydor flo would be bad anywhere but near the top of the tank unless the downoard flow was blocked by some rock or a barebottom.

definitely put in 2 MJ 1200's. I have a hydor on one of my powerheads to create more turbulence. Drilled a hole for the 2nd powerhead. Throw all of the mechanical filtration out. I recc setting up a refugium in the 1st 2 chambers. There's also room in the 3rd chamber for an auto-top off system.

I like Burton's y-adaptor set up. That's also a good idea, too.

Thanks for all of the suggestions! I guess flow is a major problem with the stock nano.
Special thanks to YellowDesmo998 for the filtration improvement ideas, I had a feeling that sponge and charcoal wouldn't cut it.

also like burton14e7's loc line idea too.... I don't have any upgrade idea's myself, myDigitaLife, as i'm in the same boat as you, except i'll be looking for lps and sps

No it doesn't solve the area right under the output as the extension of lockline is few inch's and then the unit is a few inches. I read somewhere on the boards somebody installed a 8gph unit back there...have no clue where to get an 8gph pump though. Hehe

Youve already spent a good amount on the system...no reason to skimp by using archaic MJ's.....get either a modded MJ or one of the new tunze nanostreams. It's not as much about the amount of flow but the type and placement of it. You can have 2000gph in the display and be plauged with dead spots...like having stock MJ's blowing a stream.....WAter movement is they only thing you should have to look into. Keep it simple.

A guy gave me an idea - I got a small powerhead and placed it in the middle of my live rock to improve flow around the rocks. It makes sense and seems to have some good movement.
