Any Super Glue???

Had a little accident and need to glue a couple of frags. Do you use any Super glue, and do the rock and frag need to be dry?

Thanks for the help.

most any super glue works. Can be done under water (rock). Take frag out dry bottom slightly put glue on, dip it in water it will skin the glue. Then stick it where you want it, hold it a bit and it should set up.

the gel works the best. the liquid is too runny.

moisture is what causes super glue to start bonding. so naturally the water will allow the bond to form faster. therefore, you can set frags in a particular location and it will adhear relatively quick.

this is why it bonds instantly with skin! it draws out the moisture from the body.

It works better for me to dry the point of application, but not necessary. Gel is a must. I have found Loctite to work best underwater

Gel if good but for larger frag I use liquid with some home depot sand. Liquid superglue can be found at Dollar Stores and you can get a 3-5 tube packs for a buck. Makes it very cheap.

To use liquid superglue takes a little practice. Position your frag onto the rock and put a couple of drops of glue at where they join then add some sand to that area. The sand will absorb the glue. Add some more glue and sand and build up a mound of sand and glue around the base your your frag. The best way to add sand is with a small folded paper. The crease of the paper will direct the sand to where you want it. I've attached frags as large as 6" using this method. Just takes a little patience and practice. Good luck....

aurora, interesting recipe you have there, I like that :).

I do it a little different. For larger colonies or large frags with weight my buddy showed me the sandwich method, superglue gel/putty/superglue gel. He was able to attach a fairly large colony, small base with a table growth of 4" x 4", top heavy for sure, hanging off an overhang using this method. First you get the ball of putty all mixed and then put a good size dolop of super glue gel on the bottom and big dolop on the top, attach it to the spot on the rock and hold it there for a 15-20 seconds then press the colony into the top of the sandwich onto the gel portion and hold until it sets up well. For that big colony we eventually got tired of holding it and threw a larger rock onto the base to hold it on, after a half hour or so we took the rock off slowly. It had set up really strong and is doing great. It is now growing out over space in the tank with the base super encrusing all over the putty and rock. I use this method for anything larger than frags as a frag is easy to get to hold with just the super glue gel. I used this method on a number of larger corals to place them on pillar rocks to get them to grow off the sides of the rocks when I re-scaped my tankback a few months ago. Works great.

Anybody ever put the tube of glue into the water to put glue on a rock, then press the frag into the glue?

It doesn't work very well. I've tried TONS of brands of glue and I was a big believer of Loctite. However, I tried Ace Hardware glue and that stuff rocks. Sets VERY quick.

I would say at least equal to it. I used both today and that stuff stuck a big old frag fairly quickly. I used to go to Walmart and buy all they have but if I don't want to run in, now I'm gonna hit ACE.

Does anyone know where you can buy loctite in big tubes or possibly in huge bulk?

jay - I believe Loctite and the Duro brand [as in Walmart] are the same manufacturer. While I don't know for sure, wouldn't shock me if Ace + others have Loctite/Duro produce their product too.

That's good to know. I always get funny looks when I have 15 packets of loctite. I've gone through two tubes on a very large piece lol.

LOL...me too. I was also wondering why I can't find it in bigger tubes...I have buying all the little ones...I use one tube on about 3 or 4 little frags...

The problem with the big tubes is they get all gummed up and the gel wont come out eventually. I can't seem to find a trick to keep the tube clean and free of hardened gel...eventually I had to cut inot the tube itself and then the whole thing dries up. I had a friend get me large tubes of the super glue gel at TAP plastics.

i use this with 100% satisfaction.

Home Depot has Aquamend, a two part putty that works just as well. Alot cheaper also and you can find it at any Home Depot in the glue section.

I just noticed with the putty sometimes it doesn't seem to hold that well unless I'm doing it wrong. I found a guy that might be able to buy bulk loctite from for about 1.50 a tube compared to 2.80 at the store. If it works out, I'll post his info if I'm allowed. I might try that big tube that was suggested above too.
