Any tips for moving a tank about an inch

Hello,

I am playing around with the idea of moving my 75 gallon reef about an inch or so away from the wall (so that I can install an overflow/refugium). I was wondering if anyone could estimate how much water you would have to empty in order to accomplish this?

I really do not want to completely empty the tank, but maybe this is neccessary?

Thanks!

Nilla

All you need is a long 2x4. If your stand is good & strong, all you have to do is pry between the wall & stand. The tank & stand will slide on the floor. Spray some wax on the floor to make it extra slippery. I have done it no problems to this tank. It is very tall.

You could also use a crowbar, but put something against the wall to spread the load. The longer the prybar/board the smoother the tank will move with less force. If the tank appears to be stuck to the floor, quit while you're ahead.
You may want someone to steady the stand/tank. But
since I'm not there to see the quality of your stand, I will not be held responsible for damages.

Oh, & of course you will be prying at the very very bottom of the stand where it meets the floor.

I have a 38 gal and I can move that pretty easily. I'm guessing if you take about 40% out it will be easy.

let me know if this works, I would like to make a small adjustment to my 92 as well, but have always been to nervous to mess with it.

i had to move my 90g about 3 inch out from the wall way back when i had hang on filters,.....i know, hang on.... again.

no really...i drained the tank about 3/4th of the way..with rock, corals and fish still intact.....one side at a time I slide it out...filled er' back up and wala...tank moved.

HTH.

I moved a full 50 gal by myself across carpet and a full 55 gal 10 feet across the carpet as well. Everything went fine, but if I ever move a tank again, I will empty a majority of the water out first. It isn't worth the potential for damaging the stand just b/'c I was too lazy to siphon water out. I would suggest removing 1/2 of the water in your situation because of the potential for damaging the floor. Better safe than sorry :)

Corals are resillient and can be exposed to air for short periods. They will produce a mucus to protect them selves so you will want your skimmer in good working order.

The 2x4 used as a prybar and a little wax on the floor are excellent ideas.

I have a 90 and had to move it a to get the position just right as the room it is in is small and the lights are suspended from the ceiling. I have laminate floors and it moved quite easy once drained about 3/4. I just used brute force, one side at a time.

I picked up two rubbermaid 30gal trash cans to hold the water and then returned them when I was done.

Thank you guys for all the advice!

If I work up the courage to attempt the move (not to mention find someone strong enough to do it for me :)) I will let you all know how it goes!

Take care,
