Any way to DIY a fan like this?

I cant get the link to work.

But its a Giesmann stainless steel aquarium fan 3x.

Exactly what Im looking for.

The price is not however.

my thoughts... stainless steel is useless here. you could use extruded acrylic from home depot in the thin variety. grab a 120mm hole saw and make yourself holes.

next comes fans, I suggest yate loon. excellent fan, near silent, good air movement, and they are cheap

you need to get 12volts DC of course,

or whatever else you want to use for it.

and bam, you can put 50 of them in there if you want(though note that converter says it only powers 5... so plan accordingly). drop the voltage to 7 or 8 volts and put more fans if you want dead silent but still alot of airflow.

paypal me the 150$ I saved you :)

well... I mean, that kind of depends. a fan is a fan is a fan. I dont see any controller mechanism on that geisman, its just on or off. controlling either would come from a ranco controller or a aquarium controller like aquacontroller or reefkeeper. have that turn it on and off based on water temp.

Could you please detail your DIY plan for this a bit more? I am interested in doing this but I would realy appreciate if you could detail the procedure a bit more.

I am particularly interested in how the fans would fit into the housing, and how the entire thing would hang on the edge of my tank. I would also like to be able to angle them towards the water slightly to get more evaporation.

I plan to put this on the right side of the tank blowing across the tank. The tank is a 72 gallon bowfront, and the sides are 13" from end to end. The plastic rim is 1" so the inside length of the sides are 11" inches.

Thanks for your help

well I havent actually done it, just saying how I would...

the frame would just be a sheet of acrylic, I dont see a reason to have 2 sheets sandwiching the fans, but you could if you want.

then Id probably say to bond that to a link or 2 of locline, bonded to a trough that will sit on the edge of your tank. could use some thumb screws to tighten it to the tank, need to have a tap to thread the trough.

basicly copying the unit you linked all the way. just making it all myself. the frame should be <20$ to make. fans, probably fit 3 in an 11" span.

I have 6 fans that I picked up at American Scienc and Surplus for about 1.75 each... they are silent. I used nylon bolts to attach to a sheet of acrylic. Linked, shrink wrapped all of the wires and connected a transformer. Mine have been running for about 2 years 24/7. works like a charm. Cost about $15 - 20 total...

Fosters and Smith have a simmilar 2 fan plastic version of this fan.

Good Luck

Wow thanks! Thats the sort of fans i am looking for. Do you think this will make a difference in 100 net gallon tank?

Also I have 2 options here. I can get the 4 fan version and put it in the back of the tank , but it wont be blowing the full length of the tank, just the width. Or the 2 fan version blowing the full length.

Which one do you think packs more of a punch. How much heat reduction do you think I will be seeing?

I would personally go with the 4 fan unit.

that way you could always lower the voltage to the fans if it
was too much cooling and that in turn would make them quieter.

Let us know how they workout for you.

I have the above fan, I like the design and the noise level is low. My only problem with it is the plastic clamp/ connector. It is only about 3/8" and has a screw that use pressure to attach it. It is too thin to fit over the side of a tank with trim., which is where I needed it. I wanted it to blow air in on my overdriven T-5's. THis would be great for a rimless design tank or sump.

Just my 0.02!

Wow. You know what? You're right! Too late. I already ordered it. Looks like Im going to have to mod this thing to fit the rim.

BTW how much air does it push?

Man, sorry about that. It was a pain for me too. What makes it bad is that they are silent and push a good amount of air. It would have been perfect, except for that dang blasted clip!

If and I can remember how to post a picture from photo bucket I will show you what I have .
can someone refresh my memory.
