It is hard to find safe sand anymore... sand aint that expensive in the long run. I would just buy a chunk from a local fish store or MD. Get 1 bag of live sand if you want to cycle ALOT quicker.

Take care,

Shane

does that home improvement sand have real benefits other that price?

The break down of aragonite, the buffering capability, etc. why not just stick w/ substrate designated to the hobby.

of course, the home improvement sand COULD be the same stuff just packaged different.... :)

Yeah it's price, since i need 200 lbs of it. I would get one bag of live sand to seed it and i am willing to wait till all 200 lbs are seeded.

the bird sing in the hobbie all day long and the fish and corals are the ones that tend to suffer.. cheap cheap cheap

THATS NOT BEING CHEAP!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Why pay for all that live sand when the right play sand is packaged by the same company that does LS, do you really think they don't seed their sand and then "presto" you have LS.

I Called them and asked if it was harvested all from the SEA...
with hesitation they said NO!!

so who's reall being suckered????????

How much is the sand from the home improvement store? I need about 100-200lbs too. I might have to go bare bottom.

I've checked most of the sand at lowes and home depot. We get two variety here in Southern california and they both contains silicate. Since it's playsand, it's suppose to be non-reactive so you can use it, but it's not calcium carbonate and doesn't look as nice.

In the end, I ordered from MD and did will-call. The price is pretty reasonable. The LFS will trade your arm and leg for a bag of sand though.

Guys are trippin, me and bobafet both used the playsand at Home Depot. I used it on my 60g tank 100lbs 2 50lbs bags for $5. He filled his 400g up nicely. Mine was running great for 11 months but I tore the tank down to have my 110g up.

I think its called quickrete. Its looks tannish with lights off, but with some Pc/Mh lighting its looks hella white. Just buy one bag os LS to seed it;)

The Quikcrete stuff is *nasty* You'll spend hours and hours washing it, and it will STILL be nasty.

The "live sand" stuff in a bag is a complete crock. So it's got marine bacteria in it -- EVERYTHING has marine bacteria, including your empty tank. Skip it. You'll have more bacteria than in those bags in about an hour.

Look through Randy's old articles -- there's something about testing the sand with vinegar that tells you if i's aragonite or not. If the sand is aragonite, you are safe. The famous Southdown, for example, is aragonite sand; too bad we can't get it here.

Yard Select is also argonite.

The quickrete can be easily cleaned with filter socks, canister filters, only problem is its real fine.

i used playsand too and havent had any noticeable problems. pH is fine and my corals are happy. Regular diatom breakout happened but ceded pretty quick. just pick up a couple buckets and budget some time to do some washing. it WILL clear up eventually.

Quickcrete? The insta-concrete? I layed a slab in my back yard once with that stuff. Would never put it in my tank unless I was making cement rocks. I'm sure you're not using quickcrete as sand.

quickrete play sand that is. They make all type of stuff. sorry about that! didnt make myself clear on that:D

Sam, have you compared side by side with aragonite? I had that stuff in a nano and it didn't look as nice as the commercial sand for reef.
