Anybody got some Southdown

Highly unlikely you'll find any SouthDown or YardRight aragonite sand. Cemex (the parent company) told me over a year ago that they stopped mining it on the Caribbean island where they got their aragonite.

You've got to be kidding me!!! What, was it too expense to pay the $0.0001 per pound or is it the cost of shipping?

Anybody got some used that they want to sell?

The aragonite was a holdover from the acquisition by Cemex (and, no doubt, also related to the visibility they'd have when making Caribbean islands disappear). They said there are cheaper sources of play sand and calcium carbonate (such as regionally mined silica sand and lime/limestone in the US. I was in Michigan a couple years ago and saw it at Home Depot by the pallet for $6.50/50# bags. I asked my dad to check on it a year ago so I could get a couple 1,200# pallets shipped to CO. HD said it was no longer available. All they could get was silica/quartz sand.

ReefJerk watch for someone shutting down there tank and jump on that ;)
Also silica sand is fine to use (must rinse)

If you were looking for Southdown, you were actually looking for fine grained aragonite sand, not silica. Every LFS in town sells aragonite.

Tery sold white silica once in a while, but I'm not sure what the new owner has.

does anyone in town sell white aragonite? like as white as southdown. i know most have the creamy-colored stuff.

I do have some silica sand that I was going to use for building DIY live rock. It doesn't pass the vinegar test and.... there is only about 1/3 of a salt bucket amount. You are welcome to it.

I am going out of town this weekend so if you need it before then we will need to set up something quick. Cell phone = 719-661-7421

BTW, why would you want to use silica sand? As a suggestion, if you are going to put it in your tank, I would use crushed coral as a bottom substrate and then put what Southdown sand on top of that to get the depth you want. In any case, let me know. I work up in Denver these days but can set something up early next week.

Reef, everybody in town sells aragonite. I did see bright white beach sand at Pet Ranch recently. $25 for a 20# bag.
