Anybody have Atlantic Blue Tangs?

Saw some when snorkeling even a baby yellow one. Really loved the fish. I will probably never have a tank big enough so was just curious if anyone had them. I don't think they are very popular in the hobby?

i think the size of them keeps them out of most people's home tanks.

the National Aquarium in Baltimore had loads of them the last time i visited. it was absolutely impressive because they are just giant compared to most tangs i am used to seeing. the scalpel on some of them looked as thick as a #2 pencil.

Sorry for picture quality, but loved following these folks on my first snorkel trip

I don't have one now, but I have had a couple of them in the past. Absolutely beautiful fish. Great personality too. :)

Did you have them from Juvenile state? I didn't get a picture but one day of my vacation it was too rough to snorkel the reef so they took us to the gulf side near a little island with a lot of sea grass. I think an estuary? Anyway so a solo juvenile thought it was the coolest thing.

Good to see some experiences maybe one day I will get there.

Animagus cool specimen

Pinnatus- I was born in BR. Love your tangs in the pic

Here is mine. It is about 3+ inches now and came as a juvenile I think it is still going thru some color changes.

Thanks! I was born in Philadelphia! :D

Mine came directly from a collector in the Keys. It had a yellow tail when I got it. The tail is still slightly yellow at times. These fish change their color quite a bit from a washed out blue-gray to the vibrant dark blue, depending on their mood it seems, so the yellow comes and goes. I have heard that they are difficult tangs to keep. I have had no problems, but that may be because I got it direct from the collector, which puts a whole lot less stress on it than if it had to change hands a bunch and came from halfway around the world.

I have had mine almost a year now, and it is doing well.

I would say an Atlantic blue tang is as hard or harder to keep than an Powder Blue and absolutely needs a large tank at least 125g but I wouldn't try one in anything smaller than a 180. And from the looks of these comments the people that have kept them have had large tanks. When I owned a store I never even ordered one just because of their difficulty to keep and their tank size requirements.

Saw a school of them snorkeling on a coral reef in the fla keys. Stunning fish, especially when they school up.

How did they hold the snorkel in place :). Kind of like "Dog - free to good home, eats anything, especially fond of children".

Ive seen purple zebrasoma, and powder blue tangs on this thread, but no atlantic blue tangs besides the ones of the large schools. Having been in the water and seen these in the wild they get very very large and i wouldn't think one suitable for anything under 300 gallons. The ones I saw in the water were easily dinner plate sized. 12"+ in length and fat. Very active

I agree Bpb

The problem is the Atlantic Blue Tang is abundant and easy to catch so the distributors sell them for cheap so the fish stores buy them.
