I have just read terrible news that duncans are about the size of a quarter.

Yes I know, except a quarter is about 7/8 of an inch. FWIW

This forum should have a sticky with pictures and all for anemone substitutes. Tank size and hobby experience limit the posibilities for keeping true clown hosting anemones. This would be in tune with making the hobby contientious and taking pressure off the reefs for nems that would die in a lot of tanks.

Someone want to start a poll or something about whether there should be a sticky or not about hosting substitutes?

Well, I am almost positive there is nothing confirming that certain clowns have other hosts than a 'nem.
I have seen a variety of clowns having host corals ranging from medium sized zoa's, to anything swaying in the water (hammer, frogspawn, etc.). Heck, even some clowns dig, like mine, a corner underneath a corner of a rock, like a goby would. And come in and out of that little ditch thing.
I have personally seen true percs, false percs, Picasso's, Maroons, and Skunk clowns host anything and everything. Nothing is written in stone, like it is with anemone. Depending on the species of clown, depends on the species of anemone.

I have a duncan colony thast would be a clowns wet dream so I wouldn't be so quick to give up if I were you.
I don't know if my clown was sick or not, but I came home and found this (see picture below). It was too late when I found the clown. He was already dead. I don't know if he tried to host the duncan and the duncan ate him, or if he was dead, or on his way out, and the duncan took advantage of a meal, but I'd be leary if your clown tried to host your Duncan. Pam

I have an annoying patch of hair algae about 4 inches away from my RBTA and my male clownfish hosts in it...

I've had good luck with a long-polyped Sarcophyton that's about 3"-4" across when fully open. It hosted my Clark's clownfish (when I still had them) with no problems, and will be a host (I hope) for the pair of ocellaris I'm planning to get when my Solana finishes cycling. When it's fully expanded, it looks remarkably like a small S. gigantea carpet anemone.
The coral actually grew while the female Clark's was using it. And the good thing is, there's no danger of a Sarcophyton eating one of your clowns.
I've also seen clowns hosting in patches of anthelia.
