I collected a small amount (zip lock bag) of calerpa and a couple other algaes to grow out about two months ago. Of course i put it in a qt tank. the algae had some crazy things in it. 2-small sea hares about 1/2" (awesome bonus), 2-1/4" isopods (seem to be safe), 1-green flatworm? about 1/2", a snail of some sort, super tiny jellyfish 1/16" very hard to see
, lots of tiny anenomes
and some things I have never seen before. Totally amazing how much life was in a handful of algaes from around a filthy dock!!
Now the kicker. after a month I was staring at the tank the way fish geeks do... I saw a flash and was like what the heck???!!! Was that a fish? Of course not right. I keep staring and low and behold there is a tiny less than 1/2" clear fish. It appeared to be some type of sand goby? Keep staring and over a couple days i discovered.... THERE WERE 3 FISH alive and well in the qt. Two look like a goby of some sort (small downward angled mouths) and the other one looks like a 3/4" mullet or ladyfish or something (eats meat so I don't think it is actually a mullet). All are still pretty much clear. the goby looking ones have have a sandy camo look to them with a little white on the anal fin at this point. Initally they were all snapping up pods and whatever else was in the algae. Since then I have started feeding them frozen seafood and algae just like my other fish (tiny bits). The good news is that they are greedy as heck and will eat anything!! This is also why I deemed the large isopods safe. they have not eaten these fish and seem to just play in the algae.
Long story I know, but has anything like this ever happened to any of you? The fish and other critters are sooooo tiny. They have lost there shyness so I will be able to get pictures soon. Will be interesting to see what they turn out to be.
Just wanted to share.
ALWAYS QT ANYTHING BOUGHT OR COLLECTED!!!!!
