Was reading AquariumFish magazine and seen this power filter w/surface skimmer in a ad...

Didn't know if anyone has heard any good or bad things about it. Says it's "new". I might gamble and see if it works because I always a have a film on the top of my water. Except for the spot where the powerhead is. I know they sale surface skimmers you can hook to your filters, but thats just more stuff on the back of the tank. Any thoughts?

Thanks,
Steve

The concept of the floating surface skimmer seems good, but my guess is it would easily get stuck after a few months of use. May be worth a try, though.

I have one of these on my 30 gal and it seems to work pretty well keeps the film off the surface of the water. I'm sure its not as good as a nicer ubit but works well for the money.

Crumbletop I've have had this setup for almost 5mo it hasnt stuck yet not to say it wont in the long run but no problems at all yet.

Steve80 Emerald bay sells these I'm not sure of the price my wife got me the tank and everything at christmas.

cool, thanks for the info. I might run to EBay Sat. and check it out. What size do you have on your 30? I'm thinkin' about the one rated for up to 35 gal. for my 20 gallon.

Sounds good. I get tons of coraline algae growth all the way to the water line, and so I figured it could get stuck by that. If it doesn't that's good news for reefers -- bad news for surface scum :D

I've run one that connects to the inlet of a HOB filter (lower output models) and they do a great job. They need to be cleaned occasionally, but I run them on all small tank that don't have overflows. $10 just about anywhere (Fluval is the manufacturer of the ones I use).

Do they make any of these surface skimmer deals for a tank as small as a 5.5? I get nasty scum on the surface in my nano. It's easily fixed by a water change, but I'm just curious...

I thought gary had a 5.5 setup at his work that he used the fluval surface skimmer on. I might be wrong though. He might have had a 10 at his work?

I have the model rated for up to 35 gal I guess its the only one available according to the link you posted

Crumbletop I have alot of coraline on it but it hasnt gotten stuck yet may need to clean that off there to prevent future problems

Yup. I had one on the 5.5, the 10, and Jenn's 20L. They detach easily from the intake of the filter for cleaning. Running it on a HOB Magnum 250 is pushing it though, in terms of flow rates. That's what i have on Jenn's tank and it starts acting up faster than on a smaller filter.
