Anyone ever mixed the salt in their tank after adding just RO/DI water?

I was thinking about adding just my RODI water to my new system. Then adding salt once things seem to be functioning properly. No life, just substrate. Add the water, let it run and get it operational, then add salt. Any problem with that? I realize once I add rock I'll have to remove water due to the rock displacement. But that's really no big deal if the tank is running smooth. Anyone had any experience doing it this way?

If there is no life I don't see why not. The only issue with doing this in an established tank is the toxicity of the salt. The one thing I'd put into consideration is that unless you have a sump or something to mix it in, there's a good chance salt crystals will settle on the substrate and not get properly dissolved.

I've never tried it so don't take my word for it, I'm sure someone more experienced can chime in!

Yeah I've done it plenty of times in a new system. It's easier than mixing and adding. But only when it's a new system and when your first filling it up

I did this with my current tank about 4 months ago. I let it mix for a week and then I transferred it to brute cans when it was time to move everything from my old tank to the new one. Worked out really well as you can add portions of the water back in as you need to when you are placing the rocks, sand, etc in the tank.

I've done it with all my new tanks that are larger than my mixing barrel's 30 gallon capacity. As long as there is no life, you will be fine.

I do have a sump. I think that's how I'm gonna initially get it mixed.

Yep.. Just did the same myself..
All the salt was dumped into the sump so I could easily see when it was all mixed,etc.. vs some getting stuck in the sand,etc.. and not mixing as easy..
I just did a couple cups at a time and let it mix.. then more cups.. let it mix.. them more,etc... super simple..

What you want to do is totally fine..

Make sure you only do that with a new system. I wouldn't risk any live stocks for a week or two until everything settle.

Yes I've also done it both times with my old 29 gallon and also with my 75 gallon. Much easier and didn't have any issues
