anyone ever use a sea hare for algae control

curious if anyone has ever used a sea hare for algae control in their seahorse tank. as you know, we are constantly fighting algae growth because of the nature of seahorse feeding, and if you are like me, the tendency to give a little more than a little less.

I have used the dobella sea hare before. The are awesome at cleaning away the HA! Sad thing is they can it faster then it grows so they starve. I have tried nori once the HA is gone..no luck. I had to give him away to another who needed HA clean up.

yeah, that is a fairly common scenario. they eat fast and once its gone they need a fresh supply. but what i was asking was more from a compatibility with the horses, specifically reidi and erectus. sea hares can ink, and i don't know how sensitive the horses would be to it. it is not a particularly toxic ink, but i haven't found anything definitive in my searches.

I have never in 15 years had one ink. Never had an issue with them with my seahorses. I had 18 tanks...all but the 125g reef tank were seahorses. Perfectly safe.

The one I had ate all the algae and died shortly after it ran out. They bury themselves in the sand at night. I have heard if they die in your tank they release very bad chemicals in your tank that can cause it to crash. Luckily I found mine before it started to decompose as he was buried in the front of the tank where I could see it.

I think sea hares do a great job at keeping algae down. I have one in my 56 along with a large conch and they keep the sand looking really good.

I found some are hit and miss my did great my cousins avoided ha on rocks and Just went for stuff on the glass
