Anyone ever used PURPLE UP and know how long it takes for the purple algae to start spreading rapidly. I have a few rocks witht he algae already on it. and what is the purple algae good for anyways? i see them at local fish stores all over the tank.

Purple Up is a supplement that supplies the necessary ingredients for coralline algae to calcify. It is not a magical fertilizer, and there's not really a definitive amount of time it should take until you see coralline algae on your rocks. When using it, you should be testing calcium and alkalinity to ensure you don't overdose it, since saltwater has a finite capacity for these dissolved compounds.

Essentially, if you provide the right amount of light, calcium, carbonate, and magnesium while keeping phosphates low, any coralline algae cells on your live rock should start to multiply and you'll have it begin to bloom on your rocks. Good luck!

I've used it a lot to quicken the time the rocks become covered in purple. In addition the the nutrients -- purple up also has the actual purple coraline algae spores. The disadvantage is that it will dominate the rocks and you won't have a variety of coraline colors. But it works very well. If you don't have corals in the tank yet you can add a cap every few days. The rockwork should be covered with in month (and growing on the glass)

I just started up a new tank not too long ago and my friend gave a full bottle, so I pretty much used it every day in cycling (not measuring) and I got some purple coraline, but I also got some of that nasty red fake coraline growing on the rock. I think it works somewhat.

Never used it and I have more coraline than I can deal with. I clean coraline off the glass more so than any other alga.
