Here's a shot of my old 260 (60L x 36W x 28H).

My next tank is nearing the point of adding water and measures 96L x 36W x 28H. If possible I would go even wider!

Not trying to hijack but what lighting are you using? I really like the color!

Mines 48 inches, partially embedded inside a wall. The depth looks great when viewed from the front and allows a lot of cool aquascaping:

Which brings up the next question...is low iron worth the extra money? Also, didnt realize that glasscages charges extra for the overflows and holes....from their website it makes you think that you get the entire tank for a certain price (including overflows) but then they charge extra for the overflows
"With the price they are giving me with the additional cost for low iron and the extra price for overflows, I'm thinking its worth it to go with a starphire tank from Mitch at Interamerican...anyone have any recommendations?
Thanks,
Jeff"

Paul-Good to see you again!

yes low iron is VERY worth it. and if there is a way, try and not use GG. I as well as others have had VERY bad situations with them.

From my experience Oceanic is the "the best". However you will pay "over the top" for that feature. I bought my current tank from Derek from Miracles and even though they goofed on a couple holes it ended up fine for my application. Not as clean and professional as Oceanic but those areas are covered up in my case.

Im leaning towards Mitch at InterAmerican and doing starphire :)

I had his contact info several months ago but I need it again. Thanks everyone!

Equipment List- Help please! :)

Equipment List- Help please! :)

So I am planning on a either a 280 or 336 gallon tank depending on the room I have when I find my new house :) (Hopefully by the end of January when my lease is up here).

280 would be 60x36x30
336 would be 72x36x30

Either or, I think the equipment list will be fairly similar. Here is what I plan on starting off with. As you will see, I need some suggestions on brands and possibly recommendations on other equipment which should be necessary to start this new big tank. Thanks for any help!

1. Tank

2. 75 gallon sump-Take my existing and convert to a sump/refugium with baffles.

3. ASM G4 skimmer (I have a G3 and am happy with it...are there other brands that are possibly better?)

4. Lights- HELP! - I would like to go with metal halides and T5's. I most likely will have the halides suspended from the ceiling. I'm not at all familiar with T5's, so I need help here. Please let the suggestions roll in :)

5. Calcium Reactor - Don't have one now so I need recommendations on brand/type.

6. Pumps- Leaning toward Sequence externals- How many will I need/what type?

7. Closed loop/tunze/seaswirls?- I think this is gonna take the most thinking.

8. Fans-For display tank and sump

9. Storage tanks with auto topoff- This will probably come later.

10. Heaters-Please recommend type/brand.

Thanks everyone for the help!

96x48x30...

96x48x30...

I have a 96x48x30 and so far loving it :) I would go as wide as you can fit...

Here is a pic of 4x 250w Ham 14k with 8x T5s...

asnatlas....I saw your tank (in another post). Awesome! I've been pm'ing with paul and he is helping me out too. I hope you tag along to help me with my build here also. Thanks for the reply!

Im sure between us all...you will do just fine!

Did you decide on tank supplier?
Have you thought about closed loops and holes for returns etc?

You may want to do a search on InterAmerican first.

Paul...to answer your questions, no I havent settled on a tank supplier yet and no I havent put the thought into closed loops and return holes yet. I dont know much on sizes and placement where they should be. I see a lot of CAD drawings on here and wish I knew how to do that on my computer. I will start sketching on a peice of paper and scanning it in since I can do that. I will need help with this.
Paul....I did notice from your layout it looks like you have 2 external overflows. I like that layout to give the tank a full "box look" and have more room inside. I havent seen that on any other tank. Most I see have the overflows inside the tank. Is there any disadvantage to having the overflows on the outside like yours?
Also, if anyone can send me a link to InterAmericans info. I would appreciate it. I cant search on RC, it never works for me.

Thanks again everyone.

1. Tank -- Check Aquarium Obsessed

2. 75 gallon sump-Take my existing and convert to a sump/refugium with baffles. ( Go WAY bigger on this... you need a place to do the big water change.... got to tractor supply and get poly tubs 150g for the sump works great)

3. ASM G4 skimmer (I have a G3 and am happy with it...are there other brands that are possibly better?) (You are going to need more skimming that that.... check out the GEO skimmers, Deltec stuff like that)

4. Lights- HELP! - I would like to go with metal halides and T5's. I most likely will have the halides suspended from the ceiling. I'm not at all familiar with T5's, so I need help here. Please let the suggestions roll in (If you do the right bulbs you won't need T5's I run 4x 400w bulbs on HQI ballasts and no T5's great color and don't have the extra room taken up with the t5's)

5. Calcium Reactor - Don't have one now so I need recommendations on brand/type. (Can't go wrong with GEO)

6. Pumps- Leaning toward Sequence externals- How many will I need/what type? (this depends on the CL and the head you will need to get back up to the tank... I run 2 Hammerheads and a Dart on my systems and have had no trouble with them)

7. Closed loop/tunze/seaswirls?- I think this is gonna take the most thinking. (This again will depend on other items as well... I use OM 4way but I have no doubt that there are other good systems as well.)

8. Fans-For display tank and sump (You may not need these depending on the other items.. I would add these as needed. If your canopy has an open top you may be ok there... if not you will definately need fans)

9. Storage tanks with auto topoff- This will probably come later.

10. Heaters-Please recommend type/brand.

Thanks everyone for the help!

Hope that helps some... my $.02

uztaryn...thank you!

My plan is to build the tank into a wall and have a "pump room" with all the "guts." So, my plan is to have an open top without a canopy and lights suspended from the ceiling.
I thought an ASM G4 was rated up to 350 gallons...but I will check into your recommendations. Now that you mention Deltec, I remember seeing that on some large systems....so thanks again.
I thought T5's would really help with zoanthids?
I will check on AO again but remember reading horror stories.

i love the overflows on the outside, so very easy to plumb. It also creates a great deal of extra room inside the tank.

I personally would have your tank drilled on the back for 2 outlets (flow to pump) and 4 returns (from pump to tank). One ach of these use a sequence pump (hi flow, low electrical usage). Split the flow to the two separate outlets.

I also drilled mine with 4 holes on the bottom, but with my tank being 4 feet front to back....well I needed more flow.

Heres a pick of the plumbing at the back of mine:

i hadn't plumbed the two overflows, but you can see the closed loop holes.

Plan your rockwork in your head so that you can:
a) Hide the holes
b)get to the outlets to clean the strainers

Also....remember, you can use pipework inside the tank to take the returns from the closed loop and have the water exit wherever you want.

Thats what I did on my tank bottom.

Since I was putting a cabinet under half the tank I had the returns rise 1/4 way from back and the used elbows/pipes to bring the returns forward and hid them in the rock work.

Make sure you use heavy duty bulhkheads (from Savko.com).
