Anyone have a 65g tank?

Thinking about upgrading from my 30 to a 65 this winter if I can get my hands on one for a decent price, but I was wondering how they are to light. I want to be able to use my existing T5s to keep down the cost of the upgrade.

How are you lighting the tank? Any pictures?

I have a 65g I am using as a sump. It is pretty deep. It is the same depth as my 90g. I got it to upgrade from my 30g for the same reasons as you. It is 36" and I could use my 36" T5s from the 30g. I ended up getting the 90g so I don't know how the lights form the 30g would be over the 65g. I only had 3 lamps over the 30 so I would have had to add a fes.

How many T5s do you have on the 30g. In a retro, you could most likely fit 6 bulbs on the 65g depending ont he reflector size. Some of the new reflectors are a little wider and you may only fit 5.

I do not know what you would be able to keep with 4 bulbs and a single reflector in the 65g. I do not think that wold be enough light for some of the high light demand corals but should be enough for lower light corals. Because the 4 bulb fixture is not that wide you could add a second one down the road. I think 2 fixtures would fit. Or you could put it in a hood with a few extra bulbs with their own reflectors.

The 65g I am using as a sump is a Perfecto Corner Flow reef ready. It does not have plumbing but it does have the overflow and bulkheads with caps. If you want a reef ready 65g and can only find non-drilled, let me know and we could work something out because I do not need the reef ready as a sump.

Cool, thanks for the offer... I'll keep it in mind.

As far as the lighting goes, I completely agree that 4 bulbs wouldn't be enough. My plan would be to ditch the reflector and use the bulbs, caps, ballasts that I have now while adding a couple more bulbs and figuring out the best way to reflect.

I've seen some setups use staggered bulbs as a way to get more light over a tank. Probably not ideal, but it's an option.

i have one in jersey, 07747..its not drilled, i have a stand and canopy, whitewashed oak..i have a hob overflow, with 22-25 gallon custom fuge and skimmer..i am in the process of upgrading the tank is currently running. once i find a larger tank i can let the tank stand canopy and fuge go for a pretty good price..

Dave posted a good link. If you run into any issues with what Brandon sells you, he will help you out without a problem.
