my Favorite LFS has always had a tile fish in their display tank since I first found them and I have fallen in love with them! Well last week they get got in a Purple tile goby/fish( whatever one you want to call it!) so I got it! the owner of the store said its very normal for them to hide for the first couple of days...both that he had in his display did when he first got them. Well since Sat, he seems to be getting a little braver, and actually showing some interest in mysis but isn;t eating enough to say so...I even tired feeder guppies but wouldnt even touch them! the owner of the store said if its not eating in 2 weeks or dies hed give me a refund. But I searched for more information on then and found nothing here on Reef Central! Someone out there MUST have tile fish! any Advise would be great! thanks

And yes the tank is covered!!!

hey i had one for over a month, but it was very shy. I have 2 tangs: purple and yellow which may have been the reason for the behavior. Unfortunately it was too shy to come out for food many a time and slowly diminished in health and died. A very colorful fish with lots of personality, but not right for my system. Hope u have better luck!!

I had one for a few months before. Its one of my favorite fish. Eventually I began to have problems with some sort of ectoparasites which were easily remidied by freshwater baths. Eventually the fish got a sore and died :( in my newer system I had a dusky filefish and he died of the same parasites (no other fish ever got these parasites.)

Anyways back to the purple tilefish. Mine was shy for the first couple of days. I finally dropped in some frozen mysis shrimp and he came barreling out of his bolt hole and ate like a pig. Afterwards he ate everything. Additionally all the other fish became more actrive and social. My tilefish also began to learn my daily schedule. He knew I'd come home from school around 5 and get fed. One day I came home early and noticed he wasn't out. I left the room and came back and peered around the corner into the room just in time to see him cruising around the tank looking for me.

You can also order live mysis shrimp online which may also be the ticket to get him to eat. Good luck on a beautiful but difficult fish to keep :D

thanks...actually he is taking the frozen mysis now which is great! Big Als have some larger ones then the ones I usually buy so Ive been feeing him 2-3 times a day. He is only taking a few at a time but Id rather have a few then none! He is also becoming more brave, spending more time out of his hole which makes me very happy! I am just hoping I can keep this fish successfully long time. Id love a pair of these guys since it says they are best kept in pairs. We'll see how this one goes before I even thing about that! anyone else with one of these guys...

Hello everyone. The LFS is holding a pair of Purple Tile Fish for me. They just got them in on Friday night and he is waiting until they eat before I take them home.

Any updates of pics of yours?

I have had a trio of these magnificently colored fish and can't think of any other fish I love more! I have had them about 6 months now, bought them same day from my LFS as they knew I had been looking for some for a year and a half. They have been easy feeders, friendly, and out and about most of the day. I have them in my 180 gallon reef, and they don't seem to mind the light, but they have their cave if they so desire.

Recently I have noticed some behavior that I think is "courting", and I am very pleased that they are possibly spawning! I don't think I am exactly set up for the fry, but hopefully some of them will survive.

I have not found them any more difficult to keep than an anthias, however they can, will, and have jumped. I have a VERY tight 1/4 inch mesh lid, and fortunately when they have jumped out, it's only when I move the top screen to feed, and I have scooped them off the carpet and put them back in. I have even had to devise a clever way to prevent them from jumping into the overflows and up on top of the center partition/brace between there and the mesh top.

So, far so good, they were hell-bent on jumping out, but I am even more hell-bent on them NOT jumping out! I win so far.... lol! If you are considering this fish, I am sure it will quickly become one of you all time favorites, but make sure there are no holes for them to escape through. As far as the spawning, I will keep you posted. Say a prayer!
