Not even close.

randy o i was wondering when you would chime in and settle this.i have been on these boards for a couple of years and i have to say that from past threads that randy is probably one of the more educated people on rc when it comes to lps.i have gotten in a couple of odd lobos as of lately and they resemble these pics closely just my 2 cents.

ok, i never said that my piece was an acan maxima, just said that an online store was selling it as acan maxima, which i dont think it is either ,but i can tell you that is not a lobo, i have a lobo almost exactly the same color and it looks completely different and to reassures me i sent this picture to julian sprung himself and he told me that he CAN NOT identified this specific coral unless he sees the skeleton, that seems pretty obvious to me that is not a lobophyllia, thats my point and by the way its amazing the amount of online stores misleading people into buying corals with the wrong name, its disgusting and i wanna make clear that im not talking about atlantis aquarium, those are very serious people and when they were selling this coral, there was a ? with the name clearly stating that they weren.t sure of the id.

I've been staying out of these discussions lately. I really only chimed in because someone was stating, "Here's my A. maxima." Most of the time, people are just checking to see what they found. I don't see any harm in that.
But when people are proclaiming that they have one, it add to confusion about the species.

I'll admit that there is an unusual Musside with larger corallites that's been floating around. And since no one knows what it really is, it's been labeled Acanthastrea maxima. The more people incorrectly identify this coral, the more widespread it will become known as A.maxima.

I've seen the same coral a few times (very few) in person. Since I've never seen (or not to my knowledge) an acan maxima I can't say it isn't one for sure, but it's pretty unlikely given the natural distribution of acan maxima.

If Julian Sprung cannot say for certain what it is, then your average hobbysist certainly won't know either. I agree with Randy that people should stop calling that coral acan maxima until it has been ID'd by someone of repute.

It is a very interesting coral and may very well be something unidentified. The closest thing I have seen is Mussa angulosa even then it isn't a dead on match. I have always thought that it bears some resembelence to lobophyllia and scolymia too... it's a tough nut to crack :)

ok all im sorry if i upset people i yes i was told ot was by many people that have been in the hobby that it was that have great reputations on this but according to you its not im fine with this i do have the mother colony of it i am willing to let one of the heads die and send to some one to help identify it so we can all put this to rest can some one please help

Ricordia Nut, please do not give up 1 polyp for ID (It is still living things....)
Even you do you might not find correct ID (This is highly possible at this time.... maybe few years from now we will know what it is)

I am kinda one of few person who got that Orange Lobo looking Unknown LPS long time ago and I did belive it was Maxima for sometime (I think more 8-9 months ago I guess) but it is not and It cannot be.

I marked mine as still unkown.

i agree, dont kill the poor thing, lets just wait, either identified or not, what is important is that it is a beautiful living organism so enjoy it while you have it.
