Anyone have clown-breeding supplies handy?

Eggs will hatch either tonight or tomorrow night from what I can tell (A. ocellaris). Looks to be 80-100 or so, a fairly small hatch. I currently have nothing on-hand, so I'd need rotifers and something to feed the rots as well. Anyone either want to hook me up with some supplies or take the larvae themselves?

Fred, I really, really would love the oppertunity. I wish I had the space and stuff now. I bashed out that wall to that little room last night after I got your message. I would love to set something up over the next month or so, in anticipation of a second hatching. Maybe Mako could advise.

I have tanks that will be becomming available to now... not that you have a shortage of those.

I would not disturb them on the first couple lays, then they will develop a pattern.

I'm excited. Can I hire you as a consultant to get mine to breed.

Don't look at me, they're in Emily's 20g tank!

Of course, I changed their diet for them a couple months ago, so I'm sure that didn't hurt anything.

It doesn't look like anyone has anything, so we'll have to prepare for the next go-round. Time to order some rots and feed!

Anyone know who carried Reed Mariculture products? They only local store they have listed is Aquarium Pets in Oshkosh, but I keep getting their machine. If I can find some Roti-Feast, I may just give this batch a whirl.

I let my rots go when I found out that the clowns were fun to raise but no one wanted them. I think A. ocellaris would be a much better idea but the chances of getting them from your tank to my house or any other place that is a ways away would not be a very good idea in my opinion. If you could get the eggs just before they hatch would work allot better. I do have some artificial rots I got from Foster and Smith but never tried them out. It does take some time to get the rots going unless you would buy a whole bunch of them. I do have some ice cubes of instant algae left also. I have a 75 gallon I am working on setting up and would like to try some ocellaris in there maybe. I wish it was worth it to raise baby fish but for me being out in the boonies you gota really love it to spend so much time and money on something you either have to give away or almost give away. I am very glad that I did it because I feel it was one of the coolest things to watch them grow. If there is anything I can help with just let me know.

Wow really cool picts Mike.

I certainly commend you for raising them. It is'nt easy.

My percs never spawned yet and dunno if they will. I never had a pair before those.
I did used to have a pair of mandarins that spawned all the time but I never tried to catch the eggs cuz wouldnt have a clue how to try raising them.

Who are you talking to Jason?

Ya Kass my mandarins spawn too but I have been watching a thread of someone trying to raise them and it looks like it is very hard. But it has been done so its not impossible.

Unfortunatly, Fred.

I have tried the Maroon thing with limited / non-existant results.

Would be kinda cool to wind up with a tank with 50 percs.

I agree with kass. Great photos.

I just want to breed something.... besides myself. I mean, it was fun, but been there done that.... Now for the fish :D

Really Mike? I did'nt think anyone had ever raised mandarins before pretty cool.

The only thing I tried was raising shrimp and crab babies many yrs ago before you could get rotifers and such and mine lasted 7 days and died. I tried several times and gave up but it was harder back then to raise anything.
I dunno if anyone has ever raised shrimp or crabs yet either?

Peppermint shrimp seem to be pretty easy but when you get into like the skunk or blood shrimp it takes a very long time even before it gets easier.

The quality of live foods has increased 10 fold, and the plain old availability, 100 fold. Fedex to you doorstep.

As more hobbiests discover this stuff, more people, even Bri guy will be able to raise shrimp, accidentally.

We're going to give it a whirl with Roti-feast and frozen rotifers. I'm not expecting any survival, but it will be fun to try. Wish us luck!

Kass, mandarins (Synchiropus splendidus) were first raised a long time ago. I think the biggest hindrance to their commercial success was that at about a year of age, the fish was very, very small (1cm if I recall correctly). It takes quite a while to grow them out, but I don't remember the process being much different from clowns.

Peppermint shrimp have been raised, as have Sexy shrimp, fire shrimp, cleaners, and a couple of other species of "Peppermint" (not L. wurdemanni). Not to mention most of the shrimp we eat is farm-raised. Cleaners seem to be the toughest nut to crack, as they apparently have an impossibly long larval period (90-100 days) and seem to hit a roadblock molting past Z7-Z8 a lot of the time. They continue to molt but fail to develop. There are lots of people currently working on them.

Pretty cool good luck with them.

The mandarins would just spawn in the water and the eggs would go all over. They were pretty big eggs though I thought.
They would always do it at night when only the actinics came on.
It was pretty cool to watch as they did a like a courting dance.
