Anyone have experience with filefish?

T Diddy

Happy to be here
My LFS suggested one for my aiptasia. I brought him home, but he always looks so guilty. He hovers around corals like he is up to no good. I haven't seen him go after any aiptasia, but he did take a shot at my cyphastrea while I was watching. That little bugger may be a wrecking ball in the making.

I have a local reefer who has one and he doesn't eat any of his corals (SPS or LPS) in his 40G. His looks like an convincted felon too... heh.

I just put a matted filefish into my reef last night in hopes to combat aiptasia. He did come from another reef tank and was known to eat aiptasia and not bother anything else. So far he hasn't touched anything (aiptasia included) however it is still too early to tell. I will post some updates here as things progress.

btw it is a really cool fish! I love how he kicks up his spike once in a while, kind of strange to watch them swim as well. Definitely the most unique fish in my tank!

He's coming out if I can ever catch him. All he seems to want to do is pick at my cyphastrea and my acans. BAD FISH!!

Trap should work fine. I have my trap in the tank now and my filefish was chillin in it last night

HAH!! I didn't even have to! I tried without luck to catch him...left the room with the top off of the aquarium, and come back to find him flopping around on the floor!

That was easy :lolspin:

You have a top on yours?

Glad you found him in time.

I had a Matted filefish early on. Traded him in b/c he was going to eat my snails, and possibly inverts.

What little aptasia I had, I took the rocks the rocks out containing it and blasted it with a flame source.

No top...just a light fixture hanging above it. The flaming aiptasia treatment works great. I've done it in the past, but most of what I've got cannot be removed from the tank/ safely torched.

My berghia seem to be doing a good job. They are certainly getting bigger, and have obviously taken out some aiptasia. I had hoped the filefish might speed the process up a bit, but he(and all other filefish) are now banned from the my aquarium...cool fish though. :fish2:
