Anyone have experience with hydnophora?

i have a couple hydno frags, a metallic green and a nice teal colored one. ive noticed they dont grow very quick. i am using T5's alk at 10.5 calc ~450. anyone have any tricks to make them grow faster? thanks.

I also have just one frag of a bright green variety... I had it for about 2 months before I started to see any new branch growth. Mine are under 2x150 MH high up in the tank and the flow is intermittent but not as strong as I would like. It's placed far from everything else because of its sting.

In the past, ive had large colonies of hydnophora grow from a 1 inch frag to 8 inche tree with numerous branches. They were under T5 with strong water flow.

seems like i need them to be in stronger flow.. the 1.5 inch neon green hydno i have almost doubled in size in about 3 months, no new branches, just grown in size. the other teal one hasnt grown in a month. they are in medium/lower flow under my 4 54w T5's. i suppose i will try to throw them into a higher flow area, perhaps thats the key? maivortex, how long did it take to get that large?

i had an encrusting variety and it grew super fast, it was under 2 250 mh's w/ 4 t5's , had it high in tank with medium to high water flow

I have the kind that is mostly encrusting but makes knobs all over eventually. it is super fast growing and indestructable. Whatever you do keep it a good distance from your other corals. If it touches them it will sting the crap out of them and kill them.

its been a few years, and this guy had more than a few notches on his belt by the time I got rid of him. mnostly sps casualties but the worst was a large hammer he fell on in a rockslide.....he wasnt sitting on him for more than a minute i dont think but most of the heads took the brunt of his weight. the thing was entirely dusted within a day. It was kind of impressive actually, in a sick sort of way

takes nothing special IME. In a couple of years he went from a frag to 12x10 or so.

yea ive noticed no growth so far on my blue hydno.

thats a real nice piece flyyy. i can only hope mine will look like that one day, especially the blue one i love the color on it. right now it is an inch wide and an inch tall, haha.

I was just digging through some pics looking for something, and was reminded of this thread when I came across this of my hydno releasing some love after being messed with a little...

Wow, that thing looks ****ed or something. These things are potent stingers for sure. I think the only thing worse in my tank was maybe this big Galaxia I had, sweepers must have been 12". Kinda hard to keep 12" free around the whole coral so it caused more pain than the hydno did. Here was mine, pretty cool looking under actinics:

Edit: Ha! I didn't think the word ****ed was profanity. I guess ****ed is on the list of not allowed words.

I have a big boy. Id say 7" tall and 7" wide numerous branches and very fuzzy. Awesome color under the actinics and his sting will put the hurt on anybody. (I learned the hard way). When I bought it, it was 7 yrs old then. Is a slow grower but the color is so nice. I have mine under 2x250w in high flow.

I've got the encrusting version and it is growing up the side of a piece of sinularia. Neither have been bothered yet. I'm curious to see how far it will go. Not sure if I will be able to let the sinularia get bigger though, as it is shading a milli and will be shading my german green w/ blue polyp soon.
