hey guys i was wondering does anyone have any experience with the two spot hog fish Bodianus bimaculatus. i saw one at the lfs today and it was pretty nice and eating mysis but by looking at the way its built, it looks as if it maybe a jumper. are they rare in the hobby too?
They use to be on the rare side by over the last year or two have been regularly available and the price usually runs in $20-$35 range. So not that rare but not alway available.
They do jump so you need to make sure your tank is secure. They're very good eaters and are very hardy, mine actually ate a lot of my flatworms. They need a good size tank as they get up to about 4" and cover the whole tank. I had mine in a 58gal tank and I though that was actually to small for it.
I have one in my 125 [soon to be moved to my 240] Yes, they are jumpers..mine has been carpet surfing 4 times I finally put the dreaded eggcrate on. They are very active swimmers, mine swims every inch of my 125
Watching this fish, and how active it is, I wouldn't place it in anything smaller than a 75.
thanks for the info guys. i think ill pass on it i dont have a canopy n i dont really wanna put egg crates on my tank. but it is a beautiful fish and i thought about getting it cuz it was only 20$ and i read that they were kinda rare. plus if it does need that much swimming room i'd rather have someone with a bigger tank get it. thanks again.
yea i thought if i bought it would have been a steal cuz live aquaria is charging like 80$ for a large and the one at my lfs is about full grown. but like i said ill leave it to someone with a canopy or eggcrate over their tank cuz i would feel like crap if i got it and it jumped out. but yeah i noticed that a lot of stuff in Cali can come cheap on some stuff but some other things can cost an arm an a leg.
