Which color/species?
What size tank?
What size tank do you consider minimum?
Successful tankmates?
Failed tankmates?
Filtration?

I am considering one and am just trying to get some feedback from those with experience.

I currently have a Debelus (spelling?) reef lobster. He's mainly purple w/ orange feet and claws. He's ina a 90 gallon tank.

Size: aprox. 3.5 in.

Min. tank size: 30 gallons IMO

Succesful tankmates: a percula clown, false percula clown, purple tang, starfish, snails, corals, hermits, urchin.

Failed tankmates: blood shrimp, cleaner shrimp, yellohead jawfish.

Note that I have no evidence that the lobster did in face kill the failed tankmates, he just seem like the most likely culprit.

Do they need the space or just the extra water volume? I have considered throwing one of these in the fuge. Just for something to look at when the display lights go out.

It might do alright in the fuge, as long as you have liverock in it.They are shy so you don't see them alot in the DT. They live within the liverock and normally only come out to get food. Mine eats pellets that the fish miss when i feed them.

What's the purpose of your fuge? Nutrient export? Or pod propagation? I have no clue what these guys eat, but if its for pod prop...kinda defeats the purpose of the fuge IMHO.

I am also interested in haveing a small lobster in my future tank, and i read in a book about a Flame Lobster that is supposed be smaller than 5", but i have been unsuccesfull in finding them online.

Packersfan, how big does you lobster grow to?

We used to have a purple reef lobster in a 90. Over the time we had him, he lived with clownfish, green chromis, pajama cardinal, tang, sixline wrasse, and a handful of others.

The only major disaster we had was with firefish - I highly don't recommend them or any sand dwellers/overly shy that spend their time in the caves. We didn't actually witness the massacre, but we did see half of a still breathing firefish floating in the tank one night that had clearly been chopped in half by something. The lobster was the only possible known creature in the tank capable of this, so you do the math. The other two firefish had mysteriously disappeared at separate times only a few weeks earlier, so I don't rule their deaths out either... We never had any issues that we noticed with him and the snail/hermit crab population or with any cucumbers or starfish.

I would agree that if you're hoping to see the lobster on a regular basis, you are going to be greatly disappointed. The only time we saw ours was when he came out to snag food. Luckily we knew where his cave of choice was and it was in the front where we could crouch down and see under the rockwork. Other than that, you'd never know we even had one.

They are cool critters, you just have to be smart about tankmates and the reality of how often you're actually going to see them. HTH!

I had a purple in my 45 corner reef a couple of years ago, and I will strongly agree with everyone! No sand dwellers!! I lost a pair of jaw fish and a few others, and I did witness the jawfish demise. They are really cool when you get to see them, but should have some caution with tank mates. Also make sure your rock is stable, I did't have a problem but he made several Huge caves!
