Anyone here eat Lionfish before?

for a guy who is a huge fan of the lionfish that article sure made me wanna fry one up. did i miss where it says how they invaded fl.

People have been releasing them into the wild and they have no natural predators for the most part. It's become quite a problem

The article did state "U.S. government researchers believe the red lionfish was introduced into Florida waters during Hurricane Andrew in 1992 when an aquarium broke and at least six fish spilled into Miami's Biscayne Bay."

But I was kinda surprised to see a statement like that as I'm sure intentional releases were also a factor.

Now to get down to FL and do some tasting... :D

I have seen them offered to eat a few times during traveling and passed every time. I have eaten lots of different tropical fish but for some reason lions just don't look very appetizing to me.

I remember one time chatting with a friend about the lion fish problem, we came up with the perfect plan to put them to good use back in the reef food chain. The idea is for a fish food company to collect lions and chop them up into fish food. That would be a perfect way to put them back into aquariums and give back to the little fish they ate while alive.

Also something to think about, most of the lion fish in the aquarium trade are still collected in the pacific and shipped here. They are much more plentiful in their natural locations but from what I have read in some places in the Keys they are all over the place.

There was a local here who was going research down there and he had pics of the lion fish and I believe some of it being filleted and eaten. Cant remember who the user was now.

With as much bone as in a Lionfish, I would suspect that the phosphate levels may be too high to use as aquarium food.

Dining with Death - If they eat moray eels and poisonous Stone fish - lionfish is only the next menu item at the local fish fry joint.
