well, im setting everything up for my new 125 and i think i want to drill a hole on the side of my 30 gallon standard sump so i can hook up my new MR-1 skimmer externally. Anyone know if this can be done on a 30 gallon tank?

Anyone local have the tools or the bit to do this?

Thanks!

Jack

jack i work at sears let me know what you need , come on sunday and pick up what ever you need .every body after 6 gets an associate discount 10% because of friends and family night, but it ends at nine

You need a diamond tipped hole saw. I found one on ebay for like 4.99 and 5.00 to ship it.

I drilled two holes in my 29g with it. Locally, diamond tipped hole saws are expensive, if you can even find them.

Yup. I drilled a 50 glass cages and a 75 AGA. The 50 was with a diamond tip hole saw from ebay and the 75 was with a dremel (not much fun). I can't see you having a problem with a hole in the side.

I've always drilled mine with a dremel. I actually just drilled a 29 last friday night. So far the dremel has never let me down. I've drilled about 10 holes with no casulties and am slowly getting better at making the holes look prettier.

Slow no matter what way you do it do it slow and not very much pressure I have done a couple with dremell and never had a problem tell I got in a hurry and tried to apply too much pressure. I would order the hole saws if you have time but if you need it done right now you can get some dremmell bits at the tool store in the oprey mills mall cheap.

thanks Ryan... you think the side of a 30 gal is safe to drill?

If it's an AGA tank, there will be no problem. I called AGA when I was drilling my 29g and asked if it was tempered, and they proclaimed that they do not use tempered glass on their tanks, with the exception of the small ones, like 10g and 5g, if I remember correctly.

AGA uses tempered glass on on the bottom of their larger tanks. My 92 gallon is stamped tempered on the bottom. I think nearly 100% of the time it is only the bottom that is tempered though.

Yeah, my 120 and 125 are AGA and tempered on the bottom.

Rob,

I am pretty sure there is no issue with drilling a GC tank. They don't temper (they just use extremely thick glass). Can anyone correct me on this one?

I asked in Chattanooga and of course they told me that the only way to drill them is before assembling. Never a straight answer.
Rob
