Is there anyone here that has a 450-600g glass aquarium with a hight of at least 30"?

If so, please describe your tank and stand's design - i.e. glass thickness, bracing etc.

I have a 360 gallon tank its acrylic but it is on a stand that is 3 ft by 8ft by 2 ft and the stand is made up of 1 by 6's and it holds it just fine.

Acrylic is very expensive - 4.5 times more than glass. And it seems the local people here are afraid of it.

Here is the states, acrylic and glass are priced very similar for large tanks. For small tanks, glass is always cheaper though.

There are many threads on glass vs. acrylic. It really comes down to personal preference in most cases. But of course, price tends to overwhelm most other features. So if glass is significantly cheaper, go with glass. Just make sure you look into Starphire (or other low iron) glass.

Well to put it in perspective if I convert my money to USD I would pay here USD 1200 for a 480g glass tank, and USD 4500 for an acrylic.

HAHAHA....if the transportation costs weren't so high, we would all come and buy our glass tanks there and have them shipped home!!

I'd be afraid of it also with a tank bigger than 300 gallons. Glass just isn't strong enough to give most people the piece of mind with tanks that size. And piece of mind is definitely something I would want if I had 400 gallons of water in my living room. Just my $.02

Fiziksgeek - why are you laughing? Is the cost of a tank that size closer to USD 4500 than USD 1200 in the States?

glass tanks aren't cheap.I am getting a 300 gal acrylic tank 96x30x24 $1400 USD same size tank in glass is cheaper if you buy it from glass cages but from anywhere else its at least $3000 drilled CDN funds.I found acrylic is more expensive but when you go into large tanks its lighter less costly.I was going to get 96x48x24 in acrylic for $2400 USD but It would look to big in my basement. In glass I am sure that size tank would be at least $4000 plus it would weigh a good 700 pounds

Well, I have never priced a tank of that size. But I have looked into a custom tank in the 200 gallon range and I got numbers in the $1400-$1800 range.

I have been looking into tanks 96x30x24 3/4" glass for several months and I couldn't get anything cheaper than $2500 CDN local builder and thats without saphire glass plus tax.I looked around and for a glass tank that size it was between $3000-$4000 CDN funds shipped to my house. The only one that was cheap was glass cages at least 1/2 price from anyone else plus $125 if I pick up the tank wich my buddy is going to the states to pick up the tank anyways because if you want to ship the tank to Canada from the US forget it,it costs anywhere from $400-$800 US if not more to ship it depending on where you live.I am paying $300 US to ship to syracuse NY where my friend will pick it up from his friends house and bring the tank to my house. He isn't charging me a dime to do this for me.I did get a quote for $400-$500 US to pick up the tank from the builder and drive it to TORONTO where my buddy will pick it up but he said this would be more simple.Plus the builder is shipping the tank and if there is a damage his insurance will pay VS me having to chase the shipper that I hired.Another thing about shippers is they have to be good.My friend deals with them and he has told me many of them are dogs and break your stuff because they rush and are not carefull. He himself told me there are only a few that he uses to transport his goods to the US because he has had to may damaged and brokenarticles that in the end cost you money and time

I definately disagree. In fact the opposite would be my argument.

I think they are both strong.I would think that glass would be stronger.I would look at how the tank is built and who built the tank to see the quality of the tank.I would go with a good builder who has been building tanks for many years aswell as building large custom tanks.I can tell you there is a differance between Perfecto tanks and the Hagen tanks that I have owned.Hagen always went with thicker glass. There tanks also cost more than the Perfecto.I never had a problem with either tank.My 150 was Perfecto and I had no problems with it.This will be my first large tank. The 150 was large but I always dreamed of having an 8 ft tank(and winning the lottery)The tank is more feesable

Sorry guys but my math sucks.

It is USD 2000 for a glass tank and USD 6500 for Acrylic over here (480g)... Dunno how I calculated the previous values.

I have a 450 gallon glass tank (96"x36"x32") and a 350 gallon Acrylic Pentagon (60"x60"x18"x60"x18"). The glass tank is 1" thick glass except for the front which is two 1/2" pieces of laminated starfire. It has two 8" cross braces and eurobracing. It weighs around 1300 pounds dry and took ten guys to put in place.

The acrylic tank is all 3/4" with large top cut-outs. It probably weighed close to 500 pounds (maybe a little less) and took four of us to lift into place (two men and two women).

They actually cost about the same for me.

I have a glass tank approx 530 gallon , tank is 114"longx 36"wide x 30" height its made of 12mm glass on the sides and bracing with a 15mm base .
The stand is made of steel with 10 legs 40mmx40mm

So you're saying that glass is stronger than acrylic? I've always thought it was the opposite.

Glass is a little stronger. Not to much. But, it is. For the same size tank thicker Acrylic is used. A 400g tank is built with 3/4" (19mm) glass by most reputable builders. Not sure what thickness of Acrylic, but I am sure it is based on the hieght of the tank.

Most tanks never break a pane of glass or a pane of Acrylic. It's the seams that let go. Basically, if your pane cracks or breaks, then someone has caused that, either by stand iregularity or it got hit with something. A Seam on the other hand is either manufacturer defect or the maintenance person has accidently cut into the seam.
