Anyone in the club have a DSLR?

Ive been going back and forth about this for weeks now. Two weeks from now I am going to buy a camera I just don't know what camera.
I narrowed it down to either the Canon Powershot S3, a high end P&S or the Canon D50, a low end DSLR.
If we have anyone in the club with a DSLR what do you have and do you like it?

If anyone would like to see the carnage whirling around in my brain its over here.

Anyway 2 week from now I am ordering something.

I have bought two digital cameras in the past 4 years. Both were refurbished so I got them for a fraction of the new price. I have had zero problems with either camera and will probably buy refurbished again when I next decide to upgrade. Just my .02 worth.

I bought a Canon IS50 and find it very difficult to take decent photos of the reef tank. Though others may have a better technique, I have great difficulty getting decent focus. The automated focusing does not seem to work. I go manual but the limited resolution of the screen is a major limitation.

For non-aquarium it works great.

Though the SLRs I looked at were less compact and a bit more money for the same digital specs I think the improved ability to focus through the lens is a capability worth serious consideration.

In my case the compact size was a big benefit for my wife to take it on a trip and it replaced a cheap point and shoot camera.

Just my 2c

[edited: sorry I'm not in the club (yet) hope you didn't mind]

Supposedly the nikon D50 and D70 blow the canons out of the water. Either way any SLR camera is going to take 10X better pictures than a point and shoot. My primary focus would be the sensor size. With a bigger sensor, better quality pictures can be taken in lower light with a lower ISO. The lower the ISO the less grainy the picture will be.

here's a good comparing site: http://www.dpreview.com/reviews/canoneos350d/page21.asp

And a good thread here on RC:

Covey I use a NikonD50 it is a great camera and I can hook you up with a company that has great pricing.
I will bring mine to the Mod party Sunday so you can have a look and try it.

The pics I have posted here on the forums have been with my D50.

i would also like the info on the "hook up" einsteins, I'm looking for a Nikon just have to find one that I can afford.

I've got a Nikon D50. Great camera. The one feature you might miss from the D70s is the white balance adjustment. You can select a numerical value on the D70 but with the D50 you have to use bracketing. I don't think there is a big difference between canon and nikon DSLRS. They can both take great pictures. I would actually buy a camera that fits comfortably in your hand.

I bought my camera as a package deal with case, cleaning kit, UV filters and 2 lenses for 800ish or so from a company on ebay. I think the name was Cameta Camera.

Tibbs

That is the one I used also...
They were awesome.
Service was great and they only sell USA warranteed product.

Try here. I would suggest finding a kit with the 18-55mm and 55-200mm lenses.

I have both Sigma and Nikor lenses for my SLR, boht seem to be excellent quality.

I got a regular SLR from Cameta on ebay a couple years ago. They are pretty good to deal with.

:mad2:

Nevermind.. Do not bother going to to any site that has the D50 for under 400$. They are all a scam unfortunately.

IF IT SOUNDS TOO GOOD TO BE TRUE, IT IS!

The following is from resellerratings.com (sorry for the all caps but that is how the source is posted):
