Anyone interested in an RO/DI group buy? Who has a Typhoon?

Hi all!

I have been looking at some RO/DI units and it definitely seems as though the Typhoon III from AirWaterIce may be the way to go. I thought about getting a cheaper unit, but I've heard from several people its just not worth it (including Angela, I believe).

I went to their website and noticed they have a "Reef Club Group Buy" thing they'll do. I'm not sure on the details just yet, but I thought I would see how much interest there is or isn't. I'll probably personally order one either way (nothing is growing much in my tank at all and I think its because I'm using tap water).

Also, how many of you guys out there have a Typhoon? What do you think of them?

I have the Typhoon III 5 stage 75 GPD from AirWaterIce. I love it!!! It's simple to set up and easy to use. I'm not sure how other RO/DI units work, but this one works like a charm.

My typhoon 3 is still running strong. I have had it over a year now. I have made countless gallons.. I say countless because there have been quite a few times I forgot to turn it off and it flooded the kitchen. I have changed the filters once and never touched the membrane.

I also got the Add On Storage. It came with the tank, a faucet, and some more plumbing things. Now, I have a faucet at the kitchen sink with RO drinking water always ready togo. This was a key selling point to the wife.

I have a Typhoon and so does c_stowers. They are nice units. Highly recommended. Hopefully you'll have enough for a group buy. If you get one, get the 75 gpd membrane.

why the 75 over the 100 crumble ?

The 100 gpd membrane has a 90% rejection rate, and the 75 gpd has a 98% rejection rate. This means that the post RO tds will be lower for the 75gpd which spares your DI resin. Ultimately that means you'll pay less in cost of upkeep over time with the 75 gpd. For example, if you have an input TDS of 150, you'll have a post RO TDS of 15 with the 100 gpd membrane, and a post RO TDS of 3 with the 75 gpd. In this example, the DI resin will last 5x longer with the 75 gpd membrane.

I have the typhoon extreme, it's a nice unit and easy to setup! I have a RO tds running at 3 and it's a 150 gpd unit with 98% rejection rate.

I have the typhoon 3 myself. Its a good unit I may want to add new filters if you do the group buy.

I have the typhoon 3 as well. The only issue I have had is a auto-shutoff that didn't work. The float switch shut the water off (so no flood) but the water was just flowing out of the drain pipe). I notified them of the problem 8 mos. after I bought it and they sent me a replacement for free. I've also had great luck with their customer service regarding questions I've had about setting up various peripherals (I use the filter for beer making water and drinking water...different filtration levels...and I also installed an inline dual TDS meter) and about replacing filters.

AWI is the only company I've dealt with as far as RO/DI, but so far, no complaints.

melev's one doesn't use a high rejection rate membrane. I think he uses the GE Desal which isn't as good as the Dow Filmtec that AWI uses. The Filmtec is better tuned for normal household pressures. I think the Desal is tuned for around 65psi. Most household pressures are around 40 psi or so.

No, it is a GE Osmonic TFC membrane.

Ok, I have details. I'll attatch the PDF they sent me, but here's the basics:

We have to meet a $900 minimum. Thats pretty much 5 III units. If we meet that, we get 15% off AND free shipping, which is a pretty cool deal.

So, with that being said who is in for sure and for what?

Personally, I'm thinking about going ahead and ordering an extra set of filters if we hit 15% off and free shipping. DI doesn't go bad over time, does it? Jack? Chris?

If anyone else wants some filters, let me know. I'll go ahead and start an excel sheet tonight.
