Anyone know a tank sitter?

I might have to go overseas this May for 18- 24 months. Of course one option is to tear down the tank, but I have had some of my fish for 5 to 6 years. So I was wondering if anyone knew of a store or a individual that would keep a tank alive and operational for extended times at their site?

If I livewd closer to you, I would attend to your tank while you are away. Do you have any reefing buddies?? What about lending the fish to someone for that period of time. Although, 2 years is a long time and you may want to consider tearing it down (or at least sell fo the livestock) until you return if nobody steps up to the plate.

I've wondered the same thing. I might be doing a semester overseas.

Huntsville is about 300 miles from FWB. Not too bad but still a good ways.

I'd talk to an LFS in town. For a small fee, any of them would probably do it.

Has anyone used the Aquarium Shop or Lucy's Lagoon or another store within close proximity to Huntsville to keep their tank for an extended period of time? Thanks for the tip Mariner....

I have never met an LFS I'd entrust the contents of my system to. Now there tend to be plenty of services floating around towns that offer tank management, but wouldn't I trust them in my house alone while I was overseas?!?!

The tank would have to be set up on-site, the rest of my possessions would be stored in a PODS storage while I am away. The fish wouldn't last that long in PODS.....lol

I'm sure a local fish store could do it fine.. IMO though with you staying gone for so long. I would try to find a friend or family member that would do it.. Setup automatic fish feeders and topoff. Just have someone check on the tank once a week or so.. Show them how to test and do water changes.. If the tank starts having a problem then have the number of someone that knows what there doing come look at it. You dont really need some one with alot of experience taking care of it... Just someone to call if there is a problem. JMO

I went down to LA after Katrina/Rita, I was only gone for two months and lost 2 fish and an star while I was gone. I have an electronic feeder that holds about 3 weeks of food, but the friend I left a key with to watch my tank loaded the food with sheets of spirulina to big for the opening and clogged the feeder, thus starving my fish. I do like the idea of having a "go-to-guy" in case of a emergency though.

I'd be willing to take care of our tank for you.I live in Jemison,Al about 40 miles south of B'ham.I just sold a 90 gal,so i have a nice big spot for it.Just think it over and let me known,and we can work out the details.

Are you wanting to keep it in the present location or "board out" the livestock and rock while you're gone and leave the tank dry?

Well originally, I was thinking just about boarding out the complete tank with all the inhabitants, but if the situation arises to store the tank, stand, and canopy and board out the rock and fish/coral, that would be ok too.

hey chad-man i'd be willing to help out, you'd have to show me some things. my exp with salt is limited, been doing freshwater for years. i live in huntsville.
