Last time I was at SITC they had some made with small magnets and black eggcrate. Might want to ask them how they did it... it looked DIY to me.
I have also read that you can use a heat gun - on a low setting, and carefully - to warm plastic eggcrate to the point that you can bend it into a wide U shape |______| like that, except upside down. set your frag table on the bottom of the tank and voila cheap frag rack. Ive been meaning to try this since its cheap and i have a heatgun and some eggcrate lying around. Maybe ill do a pictorial post this weekend if i get around to it.
it looked like they used those new magnets for airline hose.....saw them in drs foster and smith. probably glued to black eggcrate. search for diy frag rack....Ive seen tons of threads covering it.
Get a small magfloat and a piece of eggcrate...I prefer the black kind, it grows less algae....attach the two together with crazy glue gel...like this....
Hey do you need any eggcrate? I have a little leftover at my house you can have Swirly I'd be happy to get it out of the house so i dont have to trash it.
You can order these plastic coated completely waterproof magnets for $3 each and superglue them to your racks. You can load all the frags you want on and they will never fall. If you want black eggcrate, use krylon fussion paint. It is made for plastics, is reef safe and drys in minutes.
They are really strong rare earth magnet, not normal strength magnets. I would say 4 would be plenty for a small rack. Each magnet has a pull force of over 10lbs. Put them on the glass and slide them together to keep from taking a chance on them slamming together and cracking the glass. I have a pair that size ( not plastic coated ) you can barely pull them apart with your bare hands.
Let me know how well those magnets do...I have been looking at a lot of different strength ones and wondered about those....my tank is a 75 AGA and I want to make sure they are strong enough before I order....
Trust me on this one lol. You will be amazed at how strong these things are. Be careful with them or you will have a nasty blood blister faster then you can say ouch. The ones that aren't coated in plastic will shatter if you let them slam together. Here is a pic of one the same size as posted holding a full size pair of vise-grips up. It could hold a lot more, that's just what i had laying close by to show ya. A frag rack isn't going to be an issue at all.
The magnet might fit right into one of the hole in the eggcrate perfect. If it does then you won't need to glue it. If not, i'm not dure what would be stronger than superglue and still reef safe.
